Show some plastic yoyos you made

Question for the gallery, if I were to make a handful to sell, what do you guys think a fair price would be? I was thinking ~80 before shipping since they can be time consuming.

I am not the target audience for a slimline but 80$ I feel is fair for hand turned plastic!

I won’t say no to cheaper but 80 feels fair

That looks sweet!

My success rate with smoothness past a certain width is 0% lol

My acceptance of vibe increases the more hand made something is and reduces the higher the price is set.

Essentially if an artist makes something that’s almost more art than function and it has a degree of playable vibe I’m willing to pay for the art and the effort to some degree.

On the reverse side of a major company mass produces a vibe machine and slaps a high dollar value on it I’m instantly insulted and aggravated

I also accept more error on the bleeding edge so concepts and designs that are unusual and different get more leeway from
Me vs something like the rest of the market. So another round 64g YoYo but with vibe over $80 would be a big problem vs a slightly viby reversible YoYo or something like that.

Hopefully I’m getting my point across but I think there’s a market for art grade projects that are unique.

It’s kinda odd, I feel like there has been a slight increase in the market for unique hand turned pieces lately. Part of it I imagine is @Glenacius_K pumping out these amazing pieces, and also people kinda getting bored of the super smooth super high performing yo-yos that are widely available.

Mate, do you use a wood lathe?

Nah I have a mini lathe. I imagine it’s considerably harder to make a smooth product on a wood lathe.

The hand turned YoYo market is literally Glenn right now so anyone else that’s willing to do it is jumped on like it’s no one’s business.

A few others are crafting but many are either hyper local and don’t need to sell online like mr gates, on a break ( so many are on a break of undetermined time) or have mentioned a project but we have no idea when that’s dropping. Lots of demand but not many who are actually filling it.

We do have a few specific folks like Ed Davidson who make very unique pieces and the most playable version he has dropped go quick cause every turn is one of a kind out of him.

I have no clue how Ed manages to sell pieces like his for his price point either, he should be charging more for how high quality his work is and the amount of effort it takes as well. Clean up and set up is involved, not just the turning part.

Can I post prints here too or should I go back to the printing thread?

I saw @yoyospirit’s throw this morning and thought I could adapt one of my fixie designs, the Brute, to take Cabal guts and be a little bit smaller. I’m super happy with the results. It doesn’t fit a half spec C yet, but maybe on the next version. It’s quite the pocket rocket as it is.

Edit: specs 51mm diameter, 30mm wide, need to find a scale.

Also other than you and Glenn I don’t know anyone else willingly turning plastic by hand and no offense Glenn I only need one survivalist in my life. You made it so tough I don’t need another

Haha, I always prioritize durability. If what I make lasts someone a lifetime I’ll be happy.

3d prints are awesome. Sadly I somehow value them a bit lower because I am more willing to buy the files and print myself for the fun of the project over buying the YoYo it’s self.

I would feel different if I didn’t have access to a 3d printer though.

Yeah I don’t think that selling 3D prints with Cabal guts is great because the guts cost more than the rest by a bit :joy:

You have to value the design time not just material and print time which honestly isn’t worth much. Even if you set a 30% or higher margin just on print time and material and calculated power consumption the value of the print isn’t more than 10 bucks. But your pre and post design and processing time can add up quick. The OD guts do tak on a pretty premium that’s hard to justify. I’m excited to see what the yyf guts will go for and what the Freshly dirty ones will go for when those drop. Would love to see pang drop some more fluid again too

I am also anxiously awaiting more options for 3D print kits. I could source axles, nuts, and bearings easily enough if I can figure out what to do about response systems…

I’ve been wondering this myself. That dude cranks them out and they are very affordable. I really need to snag one before everyone gets wise and they’re gone.

Are pads, or flowing your own, not feasible on 3d prints?
