That’s a cool photo. Berserker? I’m probably wrong on that. My friend’s dog tried to bite my spinning Cafe Racer once. I just let a sleeper hang, and he was curious about it…kind of scared, but still curious enough to try to bite it. I was weird. The sound of it spinning must be much louder to animals. Great photo.
I’m fairly certain YYF splashes are designed to look good while spinning. They look cheap and tacky when stationary, but most of them look like incredible when they spin. The black/gold genesis and the silver/black supernova come to mind.
I might as well keep it going. I can’t believe someone sold me this…but his loss is my gain. By the way, if there is a yo-yo supermodel out there, that really comes alive in front of the camera…it’s this Wrath. Now Wrath…strike a pose:
Pretty sure that was Matt’s based on the splash pattern, and I’m pretty jealous lol. Been trying to get one of the purple/green wraths for a long time now. Looks awesome spinning. I’ve tried to take spinning pics, but I just can’t find the right settings for it to turn out well. I’ll have to mess with it some more when I get a little more time.
Yes, that Wrath has been around the block. It went from Shadowz143,to Fellavader, to Me, then to Matt (with a right of first refusal if he sells it), and back to me now. Good eyes, because it is indeed the same Wrath. What happened is that the Wrath bounced around, wanting to pursue it’s modeling career. It was with me temporarily before, but finally it decided to sign on with me permanently as it’s agent, so I put it to work.
As for taking spinning shots, what worked for me is not using any settings at all. I use a light box of course (with the top cut out) and a tripod. So, the light box is in front of the tripod, and the tripod is in front of a chair. What I do is sleep the yo-yo. Then, I wind the string around my hand until there is only about 8 inches of string. I lower the yo-yo down into the top of the box as I sit in the chair. I’m still holding the yo-yo in my right hand and balance my elbow on my right thigh for leverage. While in this position, I can look at the LCD screen of the camera and use my left hand to snap the pictures. I simply let the yo-yo spin and turn around naturally in different positions. When I see a pose I like, I snap a photo. I took about 175 photos, slept the yo-yo maybe 4 to 5 times, and got 20 great shots. I did not post them all in here, but was very happy with the shoot.
You can make a light box. I used a homemade one for those photos using an old box and cut up T-shirt. Also, a cheap tripod on Ebay might run you $10. I will find a good method for those of you using a camera phone and post it in the amateur photography stickied thread (unrelated section). I’d like to see more posts in here.
I also posted this in the amateur photography thread:
I mentioned trying to come up with an easy way for people to take cell phone pics of their spinning yo-yos. I tried it myself with my Iphone 4 model to see how it would come out. I chose the dragonslayer Code2, because I have a camera photo to compare it to. It did not come out too bad for a phone pic.
What I did was hold the cell phone in my left hand, and open the camera application set up to snap a photo. I had the yo-yo wound up in my right hand and threw a sleeper. Then, with my right hand, I just twisted my hand around so that the string would wind up around my right hand. I wound it up until I had about 8 inches of string left, and held the yo-yo against my backdrop…then used my left hand to snap the photo. Here are the cell phone pic results:
Now, overall, of course the camera photo is better, but the way the phone captures the yo-yo gives you a great idea of what it looks like spinning. I used no special editing software, no special phone app…just the one that came with the phone. I am hoping someone might give it a try. Oh…and it’s even better if you can get outside in natural sunlight to capture shots. I will try some today. But, I should mention this…I used a flash on the phone pics.
