um… so i got my zen 5 in mail today, and ive had it for about 2 hours. already been through 5 strings. with my dark magic II though, Ive only gone through 1 maybe 2 a day. Is it just bad strings, or is it the fact that the rubber response has ridges??? its geting annoying. Also these strings are brand new, 100% polyester, made by YYE. also, would a YYF slim pad fit in the zen 5, like it does in a DMII? Or is the yoyo defective. and NO the string is not in between the housing and the bearing. I put my string on while its closed.hmmf
that sounds like a defective yoyo. Have you looked for some scratches or rough areas in the inner walls? I just got a zen5 about a week ago and I have only changed strings on it once. I am also using yye 100% poly strings. and about the pads I"m not quite sure if the yyf slim pad will fit. I have never tried that with any of my zens, I have just silied them with red rtv instead. I hope this helps out.
P.S I just looked at my zen 5 and it looks like the pads might fit. It’s worth a try

Is it on the flat side of the rubber response? because you can flip the response and it is less friction causing less strings to break.
yes its on the flat side… I already said… the stupid housing for the response is where its breaking… also look above…
I think it’s a problem caused by the beadblasting just above the response system. You can fix this by rubbing that part down with a leather belt, and just rub it to wear down the beadblasting. That’s basically at least what sounds like the problem to me.

If you don’t want to go to all that trouble than yeah just exchange it. I have zen’s 1,2,3 and 5 I have never had any of them go through string like that. So in saying all of that I would say that it is the yoyo’s fault and not the yoyoer’s fault. It happens every once in a while. The customer service here is awesome so I’m sure you would’nt have a problem with that.
ya i know YYE service is totally awesome. all last night I was talking to them via email. they even agreed to hold a Dv888 for me!!
