I have a strong preference for solid colors which makes rankings like this a bit easier. But for those of you who like splashes over solids, just think of the yoyo’s “main” color.
Red, blue (including aqua and teal)
Purple, gold (including copper)
Achromatics: black, white, gray, silver/raw
Pink, orange
Green
Brown, yellow
The odd thing is that I actually have more green yoyos than pink and/or orange yoyos, even though I like green less.
You can kinda tell this from popular yo-yo drops in solid colors. For example the Metal Yeti sold out in this exact order:
Purple (big time fast)
Black
Blue
Silver
Gold (by a large margin, the least desirable color)
Unfortunately there wasn’t a red in there, but I suspect red would do about as well as Black, e.g. it’s almost as popular as Purple?
You can also kinda tell from the Mantis and Marquis blind box ratios, too, that these colors were expected to be the most popular:
Red
Black
Blue
Green
(Not offering purple was a big mistake though … I personally would say purple is the most consistently awesome color in anodized aluminum. Sorry it’s not pink @chaosgow but… it’s related? )
Let me ask @da5id – when you make solids, which colors consistently sell out first? and I’m sure @YoYoExpertGarrett can speak to this too, or @MrYoyoThrower?
Close in pantone but completely off in brightness. The main reasons I love pink are that it clashes perfectly with yellow string, and it’s bright and uncommon in nature/homes so you get the best visibility in the most situations. Making it objectively the best colour for yoyos you play with.
And I’d argue purple was one of the hardest colors for humans to create, historically:
Purple fabric used to be so outrageously expensive that only rulers could afford it. The dye initially used to make purple came from the Phoenician trading city of Tyre, which is now in modern-day Lebanon. Fabric traders obtained the dye from a small mollusk that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean Sea.
A lot of work went into producing the dye, as more than 9,000 mollusks were needed to create just one gram of Tyrian purple.
Really? You wouldn’t even agree that Purple and Black always do well? That’s the pattern I see with most solid releases in terms of which sells out first.
Half swaps are my favorite. I am not particular to one color. I like brigth colors and for each yoyo to be a different color if possible. I don’t care for black or raw yoyos. Brown is meh too.
I have no data to offer you other than to point to target demographic as a question mark. I’d be curious to see what colours of the YYF DV888 sell best (beginner/kid targeted) as opposed to the Metal Yeti which is more older/experienced yoyoer targeted. I’d be curious about price point as well. Do lower cost items sell better in blue?
I do think it’s hilarious that 8 years ago when I was trying to get King Yo Star into stores I was told that pink and purple didn’t sell well.
I’ll let you know Friday if black or red sells out faster with the Metalhead release. I’ve also got blue, black and red for the SETI dropping, that day.
All I know is I’m going to be making more solid colours because anno screwups are killing my margins, lol.
