I was not aware that reddit doesn’t like Jeff
That’s a story for another day… that’s actually where I first met Jeff.
Reddit doesn’t like Jeff? Just another reason I don’t like reddit then…
I thought he never used Reddit
Ah, it’s a loooong story. I just don’t like the reddit format of infinite downvoting (even by brand new users who haven’t validated their email) and “brutal honesty”.
Reddit is fantastic for breaking news and current events though. My objection is with the Reddit engine and what it encourages, not so much the people.
We didn’t ask if Jeff liked reddit we asked if reddit likes Jeff
I guess if you disparage (or appear to disparage) the engine, you are viewed as having disparaged the community that runs on it, and therefore the community members themselves (for having chosen that community/engine).
I remember seeing a thread about Jeff on Reddit, before I really knew who he was. There was mixed responses, but it mostly seemed to be sad he was gone. (That was before I discovered this place, and I haven’t been back there.)
Well to be fair I liked to start discussiony topics and some people there hated, I mean legit fire-in-the-eyes I’ll come to your house and kill your dog, haaaated, those topics.
Some examples were “what do you use to protect your hands” and “what different types of concave bearings are there and why”.
Reddit, the system, empowers your worst users to do a lot of damage. You can kinda see this in the problems they’ve had in the past with racism, sexism, bigotry subreddits etc, though to their credit they have cleaned up a fair bit of it.
Yo-yo people are generally cool though. It’s “the system” that causes most of the issues.
I’ve witnessed that kind of reaction–from time to time–pretty much everywhere online discussion happens.
It’s particularly bad on reddit because of the front page algorithm, as previously indicated. Here you can find and bump an old relevant discussion and it’s perfectly fine. Or you could start a new topic in a particular category others don’t follow or need to check out.
That’s not possible on reddit, where everything vies in a darwinistic survival of the fittest struggle to make it to the front page, and then, beyond that … a massive pile of old and/or unloved stuff nobody ever looks at, or cares about. So either you make it to the front page … or, well, that’s it. There is no other option.
I don’t believe that I said the changes didn’t affect the play. Even in my review I said they were extremely close.
What I did say is that the changes don’t make it not a 2nd Run Ti Walker.
The changes were made for the same reason that the run is being produced. To accommodate to more fans of the design. The gap was modernized and response system was changed from flowable silicone to pad.
A communication paradigm that favors quick, short posts with little informational content (like this one). Not surprising to me that this is popular in the Twitter age.
Did some digging but couldn’t find anything. I guess his account and posts are deleted.
I did find a codinghorror subreddit tho!
This was also a funny read
Not to be a Debbie downer but the collectible $ value of the original will almost certainly take a big hit with this release. I know it’s not something people want to talk about but it’s true. I read somewhere on this forum recently that a TiWalker sold on the Facebook BST for around $300-$350. I didn’t see this on Facebook myself (I very rarely go on) but if true then they’ve already taken a hit. The Peaks took a collector value hit when the Peak2 came out. This is potentially worse because I don’t think people were buying Peaks as players whereas I think some were buying the TiWalker as a player.
I think the peak example is different because CLYW is still making and updating their designs. Where as in the case of the Anti-yo Kuntosh vs. the OD re-release of the Kuntosh, people love the OD version but the Anti-yo version is still highly sought after by collectors since the brand is gone and they only produce a small amount of throws, much like VS. Newton.
Oi, it was a huge drama fest surrounding a discussion about a method of bearing maintenance that Jeff advocated for heavily.
The core of it was similar to some discussions that we have had with him here, but it was much more “Wild Wild West” in flavor- on Reddits side…
Some people will still pay top $ for the bragging rights of ownership of the “original”. It is why original works of art sell for a lot more than the prints, even though they both look the same when framed behind glass on your living room wall.
The TiVayder will simply relieve the pressure that “wanting to try one out” put on the selling prices of the TiWalker recently. The true collectors will still fight over the originals because what they are fighting over has nothing to do with the joy of playing the yoyo.
H Y P E R S P I N ™
(But seriously, another discussion topic. There’s a small but very very very vocal contingent of folks who hate those topics on Reddit.)
@codinghorror you’re gonna be swarmed by people if you release this at worlds.
