Yeah I’m not sure how they thought they could get away with that one
I wonder if the 2nd mystery material warped during cutting because it was a different material? Is that possible?
I see two possibilities.
-
they were rushing the job (they were already behind schedule) and they machined much too quickly which generated excess heat causing internal stress and weakening the parts
-
it’s some kind of counterfeit, like a resin of some kind. If it’s counterfeit then the poor machining is probably a separate issue but could maybe be that the plastic is much more brittle and softer than it should be.
They just keep handing out surprises. ![]()
I sent pictures of some broken ones I dropped onto carpet and details to my new shop and they said they suspect it’s fake Ultem or it’s been adulterated/cut
in some way to where it’s not pure.
Here are a few I dropped onto my carpet from waist height. Compared to the original prototypes that I threw as hard as I could into a concrete floor without damage.
Received shots of the remade yo-yos overnight asking me to approve them for shipping
just as awful and clearly not symmetrical. Working with them trying to get my money back so I can order from my new shop still.
I am getting to the point where I may just throw my hands up and eat the cost of the full first run of 100 and order from the new shop but I’m gonna try a little harder to get my money back first since this was not cheap.
I will say that the new gap width on the v2 helps a ton! I’ve been playing with it nonstop (after gluing it back together) and am having a blast with it. Just gotta be careful with it ![]()
Is the new one one of the “good” from that first batch? With questionable material?
Yup. I got it in for string testing. Broke after the first hit on the carpet, and that’s when I brought it up to @AudreySickburn. I used some Gorilla Glue and have been playing it ![]()
That sucks. They really didn’t do a good job if that’s what they are providing… I would be willing to do a pre order style thing for a proper run with the good shop if that helps reduce burden in some way.
@Gurggis was actually the one who broke it…
We freaked out, and I was like “That shouldn’t have happened!”
You have what hopefully will be a cool story piece from this journey if that’s the case. Like hey the archive/brev has the original v2 with the fake ultem lol
I’d be down for this as well if it helps.
You could try annealing them. If it helps increase durability, then it’s more likely a machining and lack of annealing issue than a “fake” material issue. PEI really should be annealed after cutting blanks to be machined, again after any deep or hot cuts, and again after machining. Helps relieve internal stress, and based on the prior photos those things are packed full of internal stress from poor machining practices.
Yeah provided it doesn’t shatter a double looped cotton string on these is absolutely fantastic. My remaining non shattered a grade is playing great.
I will probably close the gap even further down to 2 mm potentially, if I have to order them again anyway though. ![]()
At least they know when to stand down
IT LIVES!!!
1/4” walnut axle. Smaller diameter axle gives more room for the string on the return which seems to help with stalls. Sanded and burnished the worst of the damage away with 220-320-steel brush on dremmel. Left the 80 grit sanded finish on the walls from the broken axel removal process. Filled the dimple with epoxy when I glued it up. Response is perfect now, but there is some vibe as my drill holes weren’t perfect and one half was cracked nearly all the way thru from the “drive by” it received, but it still plays great. Video of it in action below. I’m gonna keep it in the pocket for a bit then send it back to @AudreySickburn to try first.
Dude! The yoyo slap trick thingy, I love that, sick moves and great job bringing that yoyo back to life
Wow! Great work!
