PIF Play it Forward Modded Responsives

Super stoked! I’ve been learning quite a bit this year, and I’ve been looking around for an upgrade. There are just so many differing opinions. I haven’t played a metal yo yo in years. And never a responsive one. I know literally nothing about these things, other than hopefully how to throw them… I deeply appreciate the chance to have some hands-on experience with these sort of throws before I go drop money on one and think of modding it.

That Deep State tho… A little unfair to all the other ones in the box how awesome it is!

I’m going to try to warm up more to the Deepest State and Confusion since they are easily had. If I’m able to put down the Deep State for long enough… As a Devo/Eno fan I do love the side effects on the Deepest State. I have to ask. Do Deep States ever even come up for sale anymore? Or is everyone sitting on any that exist? I know I could never sell one if I had it. I would love to find one of my own in any color or condition and try to get it into Steve Mode… Or would I be better off getting one of these other slim 1A responsives I’ve been I’ve been eyeing, like the YYR Impact, Return Bottom’s Demons Fun, or a TK SB-2, then trying my best to give it that Slestak approved response? Those 3 def look like my style, and may likely fill the Deep State void.

Don’t give be up on what you’d really like. I’ve seen patient people on here get their dream throws. As you are not narrowing it down to specific colorways you increase your odds drastically. Make a BST add titled LF/WTB Deep State. Any color any condition and just keep bumping it every day. Eventually something will turn up. It may take a while and it may not. Some people may only get on here once a month or something like that but when the right person sees it you’ll be golden.

You’re right… If I were to get another slim 1A, it wouldn’t get a fair shake. I’d find some reason not to like it because it isn’t a Deep State. Well, this box has really helped me decide what I like for modern responsives. But now I’ll have to find a way to get the money and beg and hope someone around here has an underthrown Deep State lying around.

I guess I was a couple years late getting back into throwing!

You know all the magic is? When I got it I was like… why should I need lubricants slowing down my bearing in order to have response… there are pads here??!! So you put the narrow bearing in and realize… hmmm these halves won’t screw together enough to squeeze all the way down. The Side Effects need modification because they hit and stop sooner than necessary. A bit of trimming fixed that, then after you squeeze it down you realize… whoa… this is auto-returning rather aggressively… I need to add shims to give a wider gap. I did that until it was almost unresponsive and then brought it back just a tad. And bam. There it is.

Dang. The secret recipe! I love the consistency of a dry bearing. The gap and response on this thing is perfect! :ok_hand: The Confusions play perfect too. I just wish they weren’t so noisy about it… Been eyeing those for a long time, and glad I hadn’t bought one now. Gonna spend tonight throwing the Deepest State. But it’s a tad too wide to fit in the chest pocket of my overalls. That can be a turn off.

The Deeper and Deepest States are both great throws but even modified the same they don’t have the same magic for me. That smile you talked about when you threw it… it still does that to me. Also the 3D print isn’t Layer Infinity. It’s the Honeycomb from MinerJ

Yeah, I caught that reading back through this thread and edited my post. I had thought about starting a thread on here about what car you drive and which yo yo reminds you most of it. I could definitely make a case for the Deep State and my 2010 Subaru Outback. Both rugged and utilitarian. And with each generation they get bigger!

Please disregard that last post… I’ll have them ready go into the mail on the 15th of September for whoever is next in line. I read through this thread backwards and forgot the format has changed to a list. Sorry if I drug anyone into my confusion with me.

As of yet… no one has shown interest. If you can, maybe throw some pictures up??

I was sleeping on the MYY… I normally suck at trapeze and his brother, but it’s hard not to land it with that thing! Kinda like cheating. Able to get 4 matrix in a row with the Deep State. That doubles my record! And finally found the 7YO hiding at the bottom. That one’s interesting as well.

@Slestak75 helped me dial in a Deep State and a Deepest State with some shims and wiffle powder, they play really smoothly and have great response now.

I put that MYY in there for just that reason. Most people don’t think of using an unresponsive setup for responsive. Now that one comes with both types of bearings and is sold as being able to play both ways but myself and others have setup different unresponsives this way. It’s a different kind of play and it’s a lot of fun. If you have one set of modified Side Effects you can switch them in to any Side Effect yo-yo with a narrow bearing in it. Though they won’t all automatically become responsive as some have pretty wide gaps in them.

You weren’t supposed to talk about that wiffle powder… that’s Top Secret…:rofl:

Not something I’d want to pack around with me. Even the smaller unresponsives are a bit clunky. But I might have to try converting one myself to keep on the nightstand. Pretty fun. But feels wrong at the same time. I thought I was supposed to learn how to end the trick with a bind to play this way…

Here are some videos I made a few years back where with modified Side Effects I made a Fat Tire and a Panorama both responsive enough to loop. Also I put a narrow bearing and 8mm axle in the Barracuda and made it responsive. The Panorama actually makes an incredible responsive. Imgur: The magic of the Internet

This changes things… Still too stubborn to go unresponsive. I’m so stubborn, at almost 40 years old, I’ve still never owned a smart phone! But some of the shapes on these unresponsives have caught my eye. The Panorama being one of them. Some really radical shapes that you don’t see with responsives. Someday… I can’t avoid unresponsive yo yos and smart phones for forever.
