This conclusion is based on a false assumption. The weight rings in the Phenom are made of nickel; not aluminum. You seem to believe that any weight rings are all made from aluminum. They are not.
Even the Berserker which uses 6061 body and 7075 weight rings, creates a weight distribution that can’t be “incorporated” into the design. The whole point is to incorporate materials that have different densities than the overall body. The contrasting densities is what gives increased stability as well as rotational momentum. That is simple physics. How would sOMEThING “incorporate” the Ti weight density into the Aluminum?
The contention that:
“There is not reason to use weight rings on aluminum yoyos because aluminum weighs enough that you can just incorporate it all into the design.”
is just the opinion of OneDrop. Obviously, all the other companies that are designing and producing Aluminum throws with added weight rings; would tend to disagree.
Just can’t help yourself eh? So clever with your “gotchas”. Having fun?
If you took the time the read the next post (of course you didn’t because you got so excited to “catch me out”), I stated that other companies might have a different OPINION thus implying that our take on it is an opinion as well. I also never speak in absolutes. You can go ahead and always assume its my opinion rather than always assuming the worst like you do.
You will also notice that I said that the gains from it (from different weighted materials) aren’t enough to overcome the increased difficulty in making them balanced. We believe we can make up for the difference in the weight by changing the weight distribution. That would be our opinion on the matter.
I’m well aware that all yoyos don’t use aluminum weight rings. That’s why I asked One Drop if they were planning on using brass or titanium.
YoyoOfficer is using plain old 6061 in their Eager weight rings. Bina said using a different material weight ring on an aluminum throw makes a 3% difference and is too small to justify using over aluminum. I already tried arguing your point over at the YoyoOfficer thread that different material weight rings make a difference. They said no. I’ve heard you gush over YoyoOfficer so maybe you can try to convince them using different material weight rings makes a different.
Since the difference is negligible you may as well just incorporate it into the design.
I read the entire thread. What you and JetEyeNight were discussing seemed quite clear. You said you were not going to be making any weight rings out of other materials. You then obfuscated the issue by saying that weight rings were unnecessary, since they could be “incorporated” into the design.
JetEyNight, then concluded from this:
I was just curious why some companies use weight rings on their aluminum yoyos when they could just incorporate it all into the design. Some examples YoyoJam (Phenom and others), C3 (Berserker), YoyoOffice (Eager). Apparently it’s all cosmetics.
These are two different issues that you rolled into one comment that implied that multiple material yo-yo’s were unnecessary because, in your words:
“We believe we can make up for the difference in the weight by changing the weight distribution. That would be our opinion on the matter.”
Ok, that is clearly your opinion, since you are making no multiple-metal yo-yo’s at this time. But to allow the conclusion that the Phenom, the Berserker and others are made of multiple materials merely for cosmetic value is both self-serving and clearly contradicts the trends in the industry. Go ahead, make yourself feel better about your designs. But I think it is unfair to belittle, or denigrate the innovation of other companies while doing so.
It is what he does. Matt (Geezer) has his mad-on for One Drop. He professes that he is trying to make them a better company but it is just his own personal ego and to a certain extent the justification of the high priced yo-yos that he likes getting the better of him. He an I have had it out before, most recently here:
He assumes his knowledge is king and MUST be listened to by the manufacturers of the world… last I checked there isn’t a company with his name on it. If he knows so much he should, as the cliche states, “put his money where his mouth is”. I don’t think that he will ever do it, something tells me he is actually working with another tired cliche and is “letting his @$$ write checks his mouth can’t cash.”
I didn’t belittle or comment on any other companies or anyone elses view. You are simply making this up. I addressed any confusion that might arise by saying other companies have different views.
You continue to attack us with no substance. We are doing our thing and you can like it or not. I dont care, but stop with the bogus attacks already.
On a lighter note, I have a purple Chik on it’s way to me, and this is going to be my first Onedrop as well as my first experience of side effects. Can’t flipping wait.
What would you guys suggest? I dont want purple or black. I also need help picking the extra side effects I should get. As in color, I plan on getting UL’s or spikes, just not sure what color, and that would change depending on the yoyo color.
One Drop’s usual orange anodizing looks fantastic in natural light. The pictures here at YYE and at One Drop’s website really don’t capture it well. That isn’t a fault on their part because I can’t do it either, but take into consideration that the orange looks much better in person than on a screen.
