Video spentsent. I now have what I believe doctors would term ‘acute yoyo elbow’. This, coupled with my gammy knee, are my entry qualifications.
Thanks for the tips, Studio42.
As it turns out, I managed to get a reasonable take in the last of the daylight hours. The ISO is a bit high (so it’s got a weeeeee bit of luminance distortion); and in terms of tricks it’s not perfect, but it’s good. Getting’er out of the way and uploaded will make me not get anxious when my family needs my time. Once I’ve extracted it and put a quick bit of music on it, I’ll post it to YouTube “unlisted” so that the date is affixed. Then anybody who may have been hesitant to submit their videos (for me to see, muhahahah!) can then feel free.
I’ll let you know as soon as it’s up and locked in.
Funny, I’m kind of a “perfectionist” it turns out. I did more than a few takes that were similar… each one had different elements better or worse. There were a few in today’s rain (playing in the rain is fun until your string gets wet!). But none of the takes, including the final one were quite as good as I hoped! When you’re kind of a rookie like me, you’re still thrilled to get one of your many elements “near perfect”, and since you know you can do them “near perfect” in isolation, it kills you to not get them that good when putting them into combos and in front of the dreaded camera!
But like I said, there were definitely “good” takes, so that’s what’s going up! Then I can breathe.
Greg
Well, it’s uploaded. Realized I forgot something I meant to put at the end (besides my ridiculous “Shopping Network wink” that you’ll see soon enough)… but again, it’s still a good video and I’m proud of it. So I’ll leave it at that.
Any previously-unsure people can now feel free to send me their links and/or videos indiscriminately, knowing I won’t be able to “one-up” them.
After the upload, something else occurred to me: I used a famous song from the 80s as my soundtrack, and found out that as a result, the video cannot be viewed on mobile. I’ve also uploaded a mobile-friendly version with sub-optimal soundtrack… but I don’t know if that’s the best idea. Here’s why:
- Maria does almost everything with her mobile device. She sits down to watch the videos. Only half of them are viewable on her device, so she votes based on the ones she could see, rather than the whole selection.
Is that a scenario we need to worry about? I just dunno. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a battle where people submitted multiple versions, so I’m tempted to just submit the one, and trust that voters will do the right thing and wait to find a computer (and if they’re never in front of a computer, just not vote… I mean, i’d love to have everyone in ALL THE WORLD voting; I just want the vote to be based on the full selection).
Finally got something recorded. Didn’t turn out quite like I hoped and I ended up short. Oh well, I’ve got to go with it, no more time. I’m happy I managed to get an entry together, it was a lot of fun. And good motivation.
Here’s a quick vid I recorded of how I was relaxing between attempts at my combo.
Short is OK. Looking forward to seeing it. I agree about the motivation… man… I should find more excuses to make videos. Except my family would leave me.
Great video with the… let me guess… Profly! Man, if it was a fixed-axle skill-based contest, you would smoke me handily. I’m thrilled when I can land consecutive stalls and chain them together!
The exact reason I wish we had a “like” button.
Great stuff.
I am old and hairy so I know I qualify. I have no chance of winning. I have only been at this for a month. My video will be about 10 seconds of throwing and 50 seconds of me winding string. Maybe I will try to add some music to spice it up.
That would be awesome. So glad you’re submitting anyhow. Get free string! Spread the love!
The more the merrier! For me, I think it’s way cool watching yourself yoyo on video.
And, no luck on my other 30s. I think it was a little too ambitious for my current skills, meaning I can’t hit it consistently enough to capture it. Oh well, I’m so emotionally invested in that 30s – it will be mine… Probably after the deadline though. I’ll give it a few more days and hope the yoyo gods decide to humor me.
Bump. And i was wondering how many of you are entering, i have 11 prize packs made, you guys think that will be enough?
I think it will end up being 5 or 6 for each division, so that sounds about right!
Less than a week to go. OOOOooooOOOooooo!
As mentioned in the original thread, nothing wrong with submitting at the very last minute, either! All y’all older folks who want to battle in one of the two divisions, or who simply want to throw down one or two of their best/newest tricks for an original “showcase” video, fire them over (either the videos or the links to the videos) you’ll still be eligible for the Unknown Strings.
Sigh… just a few days left, can’t wait to see what everyone has been doing
Would love to see a few more entries; I’m sure you can relate to that, Frank! However, we definitely have more than 2 per division, which is all you really need to make it a “battle”.
Come get your free strings, show the world your playing (for better or worse! Everybody just wants to see; nobody cares if you’re hammering out the next World’s-winning combo!) and stand proud as one of the “old crew” at YYE!
ScrappyLilZimmerframeCrew? Anyone? No takers…?
Haha! Awesome! I’ll take it.
I might have a vid before the end of the weekend, if it doesn’t get too frustrating trying to film it, haha. At the least this has motivated me to finish a combo and put together a little 1 minute freestyle.
I’m going to try to film something over the next couple of days, but I’m pretty sure it will be about 59 seconds of knots and winding and 2 seconds of the most amazing yoyo you’ve ever seen :). I would say post it just as a display of the wrong way to do things, but I figure maybe I’ll get enough pity votes to make it to the top.
On a different topic, I’m willing to add to the prize pool. I’ll make a yoyo holster for the winner in each division. I don’t have a ton of colors, but I’ll let the winners pick style and colors from the cord I do have. Here’s the basic styles of the holster.
Thanks for the prizes thehandcoder! You should definitely submit a video. 10 seconds of a trick you can reliably land… 49 seconds of picking knots… that just might be enough to win!
I’ve only had a yoyo since mid May, so the only trick I can reliably land is making the yoyo go down. After that everything is based on luck
Well, there’s always the “showcase” option. I’m pretty sure I speak for everyone when I say that sometimes we just want to see what our peers are up to. Showcase… competition entry… go with whichever you want, really!
“Now in the Old Folks Who Can Sort of Throw Showcase: thehandcoder demonstrates how to pick an axle knot or fifteen.”
