Bob sent me a Superstar with a new type of powder coat he’s working on for me to test out. Here’s what happened…
I opened the box to find this cool looking yoyo. I picked it up and it felt like a rock; and looked like one to boot. It has a very rough textured surface - easily the roughest finish I’ve ever felt on a yoyo. Bob said he was looking to create a coating that is great for grinds. Unfortunately, this powder coat falls short of that goal.
I threw it around a bit before doing any grinds, just to get a feel for it. The powder coat adds a smidge of feelable weight. Not enough to ‘overweigh’ the Superstar though. Superstars have always had a bit of heft behind them, and this powder coat just reinforced that.
When I did try a grind, I threw it medium strength. The yoyo just kind of bounced off my hand, so I tried again, but harder; it actually grinds fairly well at high speeds, but the coarse texture of the powder coat creates a bit of friction, which generated some heat. This doesn’t make much sense, because physics tells us that in order for a yoyo to grind well, its surface must have a low coefficient of friction. Yet this metallic powder coated Superstar grinds decently. I’m not sure of the reason behind this. All I can say is that it doesn’t grind like a normal beadblasted yoyo. Despite the roughness, I was able to get around 4-4.5 second grinds, which is a little lower than my average grind length for other yoyos.
As I said, the grinding generated some heat. Which I could feel. When I threw my hardest and performed a grind, the friction on my finger was enough to cause physical pain. Not a lot, but enough to make me cry out “OW!”. Of course after that I was laughing at the fact that a yoyo’s grinding ability could actually hurt.
I’m pretty sure it shredded off some hair on my hand, too…
All in all, Bob put out a fun powder coat. Not something that will blow your mind with its amazing grinding ability, but fun nonetheless. Plus it looks extremely cool. I’ll have to see what it looks like spinning in the sunshine.
If he used a bit smaller media, I feel like this finish would be greatly improved. Maybe so to the point that it becomes the world’s best. We’ll have to wait and see
Thanks for letting me try it out, Bob.
