So have bought two yo-yos from motion. Both have had the anno strip off during finger spins. Usually in the past when I had this problem with a throw it’s usually a cheap brand. Like topyo. These throws were $100+ a pop. Just wondering if anyone else had these problems with this brand? I’ll be staying away from now on as the finish on a yoyo is the most important part to me typically
Are they 7075 aluminum?
…and most probably not blasted?
First I am hearing of this. We use 7068 series aluminum and offer both a matte and shiny finish. Sold a lot of yo-yos this is the first time anyone has said there was an issue.
Yeah it all looked good on paper. Bought two new throws and both of them have the same problem which is rare in a yoyo…. Bummed to say the least because they throw nice and ano felt nice till my nail hit it… but two for two is really bad. I’d maybe talk to your anodizer about doing the process correctly or double checking his work? Also one is a shiny and one is matte so has nothing to do with that. Not trying to put on blast but feel it needed pointed out as I’ve never had this problem before and have owned 200+ throws over time. If I didn’t grind and finger spin a lot I wouldn’t care but I do
Perpendicular and synaptic
Interesting.
FPM handles the anodizing as well as the machining. This is the case for more than half of the boutique yoyo brands in existence.
Unfortunately this is also not out of the norm either. Multiple yoyos I have will lose dye if I do thumb grinds with them. Nails are abrasive. If the dye is not sealed into the oxide it will come out. And even if it is, it depends on the oxide thickness and how much dye there is in the pores. If the dye fills the pores completely then the sealing might not be as tight. There are a lot of variables.
I’ve never had this happen from finger spins, but I have short nails and my finger skin is what is primarily contracting.
There’s not a lot we can do to prevent this. We don’t control the anodizing process. We will let FPM know about it though. Please let us know what colorway the synaptic was that you had an issue with and if you could share a photo of it that would be appreciated.
I would recommend staying away from most small brands though, not just ours. We all use the same shop, or even cheaper shops (FPM is well known as the most expensive Chinese shop That’s why the yoyos cost more btw. If we used topyo there would be lots of scrap).
The fancier the anodizing is the more likely it is to happen btw. I’ve paid 50 bucks just for anodizing per yoyo and it still has this issue. I don’t thumb grind on yoyos that have fancy ano unless I’m willing to accept the risks.
Edit: I’m a derp. I see now that you already shared a photo of both lol. My bad.
I use my nail most of the time but can use either. And very few yo-yos have this issue. From what I can tell it’s become more pronounced over the last few years… Whats funny is you say FPM is in charge of the ano? I’ve NEVER had a yoyo friends yoyo have this problem and Ive bought a lot. Not claiming foul play but maybe less love being put into their outsourcing?
I beg to disagree with the comments about TopYo. While we are currently prototyping yoyos from multiple OEM factories in China including TopYo for our future releases, all I can say is that their quality is decent for the price
I haven’t used them before. I was basing it off of experience I’ve had with their own products. They just tend to have very minor vibe that most people would care about (personally, I don’t care about vibe so I like them). Didn’t mean to be disparaging.
One important thing to note is that all of our yoyos are 7068 AL. This choice is made because of the vastly superior machineability properties it has. We can get down to 0.7mm thickness, nearly titanium level thin, with the material, and it is the key to how we design our yoyos.
However, most yoyos are 6061. This gives them an automatic resiliency when anodized that 7000 series aluminums do not enjoy. Because of the extra zinc content in 7000 series alloys, they are more susceptible to microcracking, especially for thicker oxides (that you would use for filling with dye). Therefore, this is common with 7075 and 7068 yoyos. Your experience with other yoyos is probably mostly 6061. Most of yoyofriends designs are 6061. But I have experienced a lot of these issues on 7000 series. It only happens when I grind on my fingernails, though. They are very durable to impact (more so than 6061). But consistent rubbing is more likely to cause problems for 7000 series.
If you’d like to know more, I encourage you to look into the anodizing pros and cons between 6000 and 7000 series aluminums. It is interesting stuff.
I don’t think this is an FPM quality issue. To say that, you’d have to expect them to perform scratch testing on every batch after anodizing. That would create scrap or rework that I feel is unnecessary, especially since the problem occurring is random (microcracking is not detectable with the human eye and it is not specific to an entire batch, only specific units). I really just think this is a risk that comes with the material.
A lot of helpful info here. I have a lot of throws and I guess youre right the “finish” and anno seems a little better on the al6. It seems the “finish” on the al7’s i have is more inconsistent in quality. Not sure what topyo uses but they were the worst for this back when I bought them. Not blasting topyo though for the price range they are good yo-yos
Would like to add @JEA86 reached out and is helping me out. Which he didnt have to do. So even though the throws didnt work out for me this guy and company are clearly good people and stand by their products. And for what it’s worth even with the anno issues they play great just would be better with the anno not feeling like a chalkboard ![]()
How would they help you out with them if you’ve sold them already? ![]()
They can’t fix the yoyo brother. But when you’re buying two yos in two different color ways and they both have issues it’s nice to have someone help you out a little
For sure when you’ve still got them, just felt a bit odd when you post about ano issues a week after you sold me the synaptic, if the guys thinking he’s replacing current throws you own vs ones you’ve sold it just reads different ![]()
Difference is you agreed to buy the yoyo with stated anno wear and then proceed to make it a moral dilemma? You posted looking for this color way i wasnt going to even sell the synaptic originally. I took a 20 dollar loss on it at the end of the day and you got the yoyo you wanted. I made a post when a ridiculous amount of anno came off my other motion throw. The manufacturer reaches out to me and you proceed to make it a moral dilemma. Appreciate it
Literally didn’t make it a moral anything in asking how they plan to help and clarifying you’ve sold these which you didn’t do ![]()
I also told him I sold one? Either way I am going to lose $50+. So I don’t see where this is your issue or concern
