Maurice Chavez Appreciation Thread (AKA @yoyodoc)

He’s known on this forum as “yoyodoc” and generally as “Mo”, but I figured I’d use his spelled-out moniker in an appreciation thread title, as it’s a classy name. Mo was one of the first Area 51 yo-yo modders and won the World’s Yo-Yo Modding Competition multiple times back in the day. He used to post amazing 3-D photos of his creations on the forums and was instrumental in the design of several offerings in the YoYoJam line. If you happen to have any yo-yos that have been “Mo-bilized” please post photos here. I’ll start off:

This is one of my all-time favorite yo-yos. It is a cut-down Freehand 1 fitted with Henry’s Viper shells. I let a kid play with this at Nationals one time and he didn’t want to give it back to me. He pleaded with Mo to make him one!

Mo fixed my Avalanche i fell onto while rollerskating. Went from a pulse vibey paperweight to a pretty smooth EDC! Very kind and talented fellow.

One of my favorite Mo mods was a kidnapped and later ransomed bulldog. His yoyojam models were some of my favorites, so much so I modeled a prototype off of one of them. I used to talk to him in the old yoyo chat rooms and I finally met him at the nationals in LA a few years ago. I’ll be honest I thought he would be taller with more hair :joy: but other than that it was awesome catching up with someone I had talked to for 15 years at that point.

Here’s another:

This is a Playmaxx Stunt Pilot fitted with weight rings and Henry’s Viper hubs, one black anodized, the other POLISHED. Pretty swank.

Reviving this thread because I just picked this beauty up in a large collection I bought a couple days ago.

This is definitely a Mo-bilized Snake, but it’s wider than the Stunt Pilot-based one. Mo, can you clue us on this? It’s gorgeous, and probably still smooth as glass. I was always impressed that people like Mo and Frank Difeo could use their industrial chops to create something fun and beautiful. Things like that don’t happen every day.

I talked to Seth Peterson about this one. Seems to be YoYoJam Patriot body. Possibly “transitional” when they were switching from yellow to red in the molding machine. @yoyodoc care to further our knowledge?

dope ride fur sure…

I can definitely fill you guys in a little bit on that orange yo-yo with the viper hubs.

That is not one of my custom mod yo-yos.

First of all, I’ve never glued any plastic rings like that into the cup area. And if I ever did, the glue would be so precise, you wouldn’t even notice it.

Second of all when I used viper hubs on a good number of mods many many years ago, I either left them dead stock ano/clear or I stripped the Ano and polished the viper halves to pretty much a mirror finish.

Something else I noticed. That juicy looking orange color. I don’t even know how that was achieved? It almost looks like paint. And if there was an orange plastic yo-yo that looked like that I missed that somehow. And I’m staring at those halves, and I honestly don’t even know what yo-yo they’re from?

I understand that since I’m a senior citizen now I may skip a beat now and then when it comes to everything I should remember, lol

But I’m normally sharp as a razor in my recall is just about a sharp. But even if I had amnesia, I usually know my work when I see it. And there’s nothing about that yo-yo that looks like my work. I’m not saying it’s bad work. I will say that’s a little rough. It just doesn’t have the detail that I was used to spending the time to get.

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time of a case of mistaken identity. Over the years I’ve had several people come up to me nationals contests and show me a yo-yo and tell, hey Doc, II bought one of your old mods. And I look at it and I tell him that’s a nice yo-yo but I didn’t do it.

Nobody tried to bootleg any of my mods that I know of. And by bootleg, I mean, make something that looks almost like one of my mods, and then sell it for more than it’s worth. I personally have never considered any of my mods to be worth anymore than what it took me to put them together. If anybody’s known me for a while, they’ll know that and all the years I customized yo-yos, I never put a yo-yo up for sale. I’ve never had any plan to try to do custom stuff and turn it into money. Modding yo-yos was always a hobby, and never an occupation.

So that orange yo-yo is pretty cool and everything but I certainly didn’t do it. Sorry about that.
