Material Mix up Not 7068

Saw this PSA from UNPL about 7068 yoyos

Yoyofriends has also responded with their receipts

@LinksLegionaire can you shed some more light on this topic, I’ve seen you post about Metallurgy in the past.

Without looking into this further, but just to clarify what you have included here, YoyoFriends (FPM) has stated that they were not affected by this fraud, as they have done their own material testing. Yes?

I don’t know about the #2 mystery alloy, but I personally find 6061 and 7068 to feel quite different in the hand. In density, in hardness, and even in finish texture. Now 7075 vs 7068… I would not be able to tell those apart.

I’m not sure if FPM machined those yoyos for UNPRLD and I think just wanted to get ahead of this before there is a witch hunt is my understanding.

Yes, this is what I was also trying to clarify.

I’m not certain now I thought it wasn’t and asked Tyler to double check and he said he didn’t want to disclose what factory it was or wasn’t so idk.

Philip from YYFr stated that FPM did not machine the yoyos in question for UNPRLD.

(this isn’t directed at you Henry)

But here’s just a friendly reminder that baseless speculation and fearmongering is not helpful. If you have something productive to say on the matter, great. But just speculating with zero knowledge of the situation or parties involved accomplishes nothing.

Material testing but doesn’t seem like they tested any of their actual yoyos, so take it with a grain of salt.

I’m no aluminum expert, but I can tell you that having THAT much iron in any aluminum alloy means it’s junk. I’d expect the ductility to be atrocious.

aight cool this is exactly what I was curious about so thank you. and yeah I agree like fear mongering and stuff isn’t helpful

Can’t be worse than the junk superwides yyf sells in may during their b grade sale.

I applaud Tyler for giving folks options to feel redemption and get some form of repayment for the mix up. Many folks would have simple moved on and said nothing.

And FPM jumping in-front of this showing they had nothing to do with this event and have tested their material was smart.

Honestly I wouldn’t notice if I was given three mono al yo-yos of different composition. Maybe it’s noticeable but I don’t think I would be able to tell.

All of my recent YYF yoyos have aluminum that just feels… cheap somehow. Recent as in my Cypher from 2014 and anything newer.

Anyone remember the JK? That thing felt especially awful.

This post was not intended to place any blame. It was more of a platform to share and consolidate the discussion going on about a mix up of a Bar Stock used in the machining of Yo-Yos. I use to work for Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) and know their tag line “When You Need To Be Sure” and appreciate the fact that YYFrs has shared their MTRs ( Mill Test Report) on their purchased materials. Also there are a lot of users of this platform that don’t use some of the socials, that may want to be informed of the issue.

400ppm of lead in sample 24-5346-2 :open_mouth:

i believe this is 4x the legal limit in toys

The Yo-Yos of concern listed as 7068 Aluminum

Cool that unprld followed up about the tip they got and is making things right with customers. Color me…not very surprised about the nature of the tested metal, though. Wonder how often testing like this takes place typically.

So you’re telling me I could buy a $45 yoyo that may contain a little too much lead and get another one for free? Kind of a steal if you ask me.

I never thought I would have to warn people not to lick yo-yos but I guess here we are…

The toxicity of alloyed lead is significantly lower than pure lead. The big fuss about lead in toys concerned old paints which could chip/flake and create dust that could be harmful if inhaled and high concentrations of lead in brass/tin/pewter which contained many many times the amount of lead found in the aluminum reported here.

As long as you’re not taking sandpaper to your yoyos and sniffing in the dust or melting them down and huffing the fumes, there’s not much concern.
