@DocPop has a video on this
Thanks for necroing so I could find this thread, Berv.
I like the concept of the Fediverse, but Iām not keen on Mastodon or Lemmy due to their censorship. Resistance to censorship is the biggest advantage to federation. If I wanted to be censored, Iād stay on the platforms with more users and/or better user experience (otherwise) that already do that. Kbin probably wouldāve been better about this, but their servers never recovered from the Reddit exodus. At least theyāre more private than Discord or Meta.
For communication regarding yoyo content, Discourse (i.e. this platform) is already open-source, has no ads, is relatively private, and functions very well imo. Only small con for me is that speech is restricted - inconsistently, but I digress - to keep the focus on kid-friendly yoyo content. Other than that, itās good enough for me.
I quit Twitter/X when Musk started to make his beliefs felt by all. Mastodon is fine, but limited. Bluesky I currently like. Reddit less useful since open searches are hidden behind Google.
For yoyo discussion, this is the best place. Established, content mature and, importantly, well moderated.
Why bold?
To differentiate from āDiscordā and āDiscourseā, is my assumption, both of which are apps in the āsocial mediaā sphere so it can get confusing quickly
I still like phpbb more
Couldnāt have said this better myself
I too like to make raspberries occasionally
phpBB (PHP Bulletin Board) is alternative forum software compared to Discourse which is what YYEF currently uses.
Iām not the biggest fan of Discourse because I feel like it tried to alter the structure of forums to be closer to social media. I donāt like the way that the react button can drive interactions and lead to people creating low quality posts just for low effort engagement. And the structure of the home page as an active feed feels very chaotic and disorganized.
Iām nitpicking really, Iām very glad the YYE forums are around and thereās much worse forum software than Discourse.
Apologies if Iām just stating things you already knew, I just felt like my last post was so low quality it warranted a proper response.
No worries. I was making a joke on the onomatopoeia, however, thank you for explaining phpBB to me
Iāve used Signal for ages, and I love it. I just applied for a PeerTube account. I tried loops and donāt like it, and I wonāt be using Frendica.
Well thatās handy
If youāre looking at signal for private/encrypted message, itās since come out that thatās not actually the case and Signal is more than happy to share messages with local law enforcement, no warrant needed
Edit: Revising due to wires being crossed. This was Telegram. Warrants issued and processed spiked after CEO was arrested for refusal to share data. Additionally, Ukraine govāt restricted its use in govāt and military due to security risks. I wonāt link links due to itās political nature, but easy enough to find online with the info Iāve shared
I love using Mastodon and the folks that I met there. It was hard ditching Twitter a few years back, but Iām glad I did because Mastodon has made the social web more fun again. For folks who may not be familiar with it, the fediverse is a version of the social web where you can connect and interact with users on other platforms. So if I post to Mastodon, folks on Pixelfed can reply and interact with my posts from within Pixelfed. Itās also possible to move around servers without losing any of your followers. All of that means that itās decentralized and impossible for any one person or company to purchase. Of course that decentralization also means thereās a bit of a learning curve to get started too.
Honestly, the fediverse reminds me a lot of the early days of Twitter and Instagram, where I had to explain how @ replies worked, what hashtags were for, and why someone would join a service ājust to share photos of their lunchā. I hope that in a few years, the fediverse is as easy a concept for folks as Instagram is today.
As someone mentioned earlier, I have been publishing a lot of videos about the fediverse, including this short explainer about it that Iām really proud of, but I think a great starting point might be JenJenās guide to Mastodon for artists (only four minutes long!).
I spent 17 years growing my audience on Twitter, and never never imagined the site would fall apart as quickly as it did. Now Iām worried about the same thing happening on Youtube or Instagram, so thatās why Iām exploring alternatives, even if they arenāt thriving yet. In fact, Instagram has just rolled out a few new policies and changes (like I talk about in this video) that have me worried itās about itās future too.
hey so ive found zero evidence for this claim and youāve not included any sources. why are you spreading misinformation?
My apologies! You are correct, I have edited my OP and Iāll share my quote in this reply so it shows as new to people who have already visited but wouldnāt think to reply
Ditching Twitter felt really hard for me because Iād been on the platform since 2007, and was operating so heavily under the mindset of āWell I donāt enjoy looking at Twitter/Instagram, so replacing those with an account on a new social media site just isnāt something I actually want.ā
I nade a bluesky account a bit ago and only seeing posts made or shared by accounts I follow has actually made me enjoy the concept of social media again. Twitter still has this as an option but being defaulted to the for you tab is actually such an awful design that has made the site borderline unusable especially after the death of tweetdeck.
I think thereās gonna be a lot of reluctance of people wanting to swap or give newer things a chance from people with the same mindset I had. Where theyāre conflating a dislike of the current popular social media platforms with the dislike of social media as a concept.
This forum and discord are the only places I really frequent heavily. If I could cut it all I would probably be better off but alas thatās not how it works
Hadnāt heard of that one previously. Looks interesting. I get what you mean about emojis rewarding low-effort content.
@megachicken289 Still, Session > Signal.
Fwiw, I have no opinion either way. I donāt know enough people to need/use/justify-the-use-of any of them. I just know of them and have heard things about them
