Does anyone know of a Mastodon or Fediverse instance for Yoyoers or skill toy folks?
(Anyone want to set one up, cough cough?)
Does anyone know of a Mastodon or Fediverse instance for Yoyoers or skill toy folks?
(Anyone want to set one up, cough cough?)
I was recently thinking about this, but have been on the fence about setting one up. If thereās enough interest, Iām more than happy to.
What are those words?
Mastodon is an open-source, decentralized twitter-like service. No one specifically āownsā it, and people can spin up their own instances to create private communities, or tie into the network as a whole.
TL:DR - Twitter-like service not owned by Musk that can be custom tailored to specific communities.
Count me interested. I like the instance Iām currently on okay, but wish there was a yoyo space there. It would probably better match my interests at this point.
I personally would like less places to get my yo-yo news and discussion. I already opted out of the Fixed Axle discord.
I thought they were both bands
I donāt like Mastodon. Itās combining the worst aspects of existing social media on the user-end. The problem with Discord is that itās hard to find yoyo servers because āyou just have to know it exists.ā You wonāt randomly stumble on even a fraction of the yoyo servers unless somebody in one just mentions it to you. Itās easier to find Facebook groupsā¦ but the problem with that is you both need to use Facebook and the biggest ones are private and joinable by membership request only (which means you need an account to even browse them.)
The problem with Twitter or Instagram is that they arenāt really a community, although itās very easy to find countless yoyo players all around the world, with posts in any language, itās just disjointed players who interact with each other. Thereās no defined yoyo circles or anything within them.
The beauty of the YYE forums is that anybody with access to an internet search engine can easily find, browse, and even join the forums. An actual community website thatās easy to find and join. Separate Mastadon instances are going to just be another niche walled off little club, but on a platform thatās just not great for actual discussion or community things as a whole. Discord is better at providing community/discussion, but at the cost of being hard to find.
Not trying to be a big downer on the idea, I just think if you started a yoyo oriented Mastodon instance youād basically just have the initial influx of users and youād never grow. New people wouldnāt be joining or finding it. If you want to do it for fun go for, I just donāt see it ever taking off or growing.
This is a good point. Maybe the forums are the best place for community and accessibility. The last thing we need is another internet cloister.
I just mostly wanted to avoid spamming the Tabletop.social instance with yoyo stuff . But they can deal with it.
Yeah, like Iām not trying to dumpster on Mastodon in general as a platform. Itās nice and has its placeā¦ Iām still just a little sad at how yoyo discussion online used to be very visible and accessible across multiple big forums, and now most of itās happening in private Facebook groups/discord servers that you just have to find out by already knowing people in them.
Makes it really hard for new players I think to get into a community or feel like they have a place within the scene. Social media is a lot of people trying to fight for clout, but I think the forums here kinda humbles it down into just discussion where everybody is welcome. You donāt need to know a lot of tricks or have a crazy collection to contribute in a meaningful way to the forums. On social media if youāre not posting something that other people are interested in (tricks/collection), it sorta just feels like you donāt exist and youāre stuck in a void. If the YYE forums didnāt exist I donāt know if Iād have totally stuck with yoyoing like I have, because I didnāt know where else to try and find yoyo friends or talk about the hobby I was having so much fun with.
I find this discord very american orientated with no real connection to throwers here in Australia
Itās not really a cloister the way Discord is. You can search/view mastodon posts from many instances without even having an account, which means itās searchable and public.
Mastodon ā Hereās the search link for the #yoyo tag on mastodon.social, the original instance. It includes results from any mastodon server that it federates with, including the ones that me and Eric. Doc Pop is on there!
This also kind of highlights that you donāt really need an instance for yoyoing - all you need to do is use the yoyo hashtag and people can discover you there.
Fediverse is a portmanteau of two words, āfederationā and āuniverseā and itās basically a group of federated (interconnected) servers that can communicate with each other. The servers are independent (which is how you can set up your own), but the servers can communicate with other servers, allowing you to access everything if you so choose. It also means that everything is searchable from any server as well.
Whatās the point of a fediverse? Well, everything is decentralised and autonomous, so no singular central authority like a company or government that controls the entire network, which means you have the freedom to simply spin up your own instance (server) if you donāt like how things are being run. It is more robust as well because the servers are independent, so one server going down wouldnāt mean the entire service going down, unlike Facebook or WhatsApp.
Mastodon is a twitter-like service that has this infrastructure.
Maybe this is the best idea for now. Iāll just use #yoyo when posting stuff there, and I usually cross post anyway to try to include everyone. If anyone want to connect over toots, You can find me at eric@tabletop.social
