Let's talk Mechanical Keyboards

Thats something i tried, i did but Foam between the PCB and the aluminium but i cant get it everywhere and the dampenig effect is quite low. I got used to it, but people on the phone are sometimes annoyed by it

How about some dampening rings? They slip over the stem of the keycap and reduce the ‘thud’ of the cap hitting the switch.

That’s actually a great Idea. Will try this out

I’ve had this for about a week. It’s a GK64S. An extremely sturdy keyboard with box whites The only thing I wish was better about it was that is had a steel switch plate instead of fibreglass.

Is that a hotswap board? If so, it shouldn’t be too much trouble to replace the plate.

Hi. I want to mod a keyboard but I would like some cheap first time recommendations. What keyboard should I buy for this and should I custom dye keys or do something else? I’m looking at a white key cap set to dye, but if you guys don’t think I should dye the first time, then I’d probably do something different. Recommendations?

My buddy sent me a RoMac kit and a big sheet of acrylic (with apparently more on the way).

I just finished cutting the acrylic.

Unfortunately I have absolutely no use for this macro pad but it was fun to build and isn’t that the point of it all?

Reccomendations?

I’m having trouble finding a 65% plate for it.

What kind of mods are you looking to do besides dyeing keycaps?
Off the top of my head, ‘typical’ keyboards mods are:
-Lubing switches/spring swaps
-Band-aid mod for stabilizers
-Case padding/sound dampening

I don’t know much about dyeing plastic, but you could get a cheap keycap set off Amazon for $20 or so and mess around with it. Most keycaps are either PBT or ABS. AFAIK ABS isn’t very easy to dye.

Keyboards mods are easiest when building the thing yourself from the ground up.

I would probably be putting some o rings on there, and maybe switching out the switches but I have a question for you: what did you do with your first keyboard?

Also, another thing I could just make one from scratch, but that would be not cheap and idrk if that’s a good option for a beginner.

Is that a synth I see on the right?

Same family, Elektron Digitakt. Sampler / Drum Machine. Can sequence synthesizers via MIDI, or play single cycle waveforms to act synth-like.

I was looking at one of those, too expensive though. Ended up buying a korg minilogue.

Yeah, took me a while to hunt one down secondhand.

My first mech was a GK64 and I didn’t change anything besides the switches (it was hotswap) and keycaps. Second was a DZ60 hotswap that I assembled from off the shelf parts. Then another DZ60 which was my first time soldering a board. Then I recently build an XD68.

Building your own isn’t horribly expensive. The first DZ60 I made: case ($40) plate ($20) PCB ($35) switches ($30) keycaps ($100). So $225 all together. Could’ve been cheaper if I used cheaper caps.
