I do not understand competitive eating.

You don’t have to understand it, you just have to CHOW DOWN HARD.
Actually, I’m with you on this one; competitive eating is a bit off.
You train by drinking a lot of water to expand your stomach(less room to expand if you’re a bigger guy which is why many world class eaters are fairly slim) and eating a lot to overcome the feeling of being full and work on chewing quickly and swallowing as much and as quickly as possible.
Helpful for when you want to maximize your value at a buffet
