That sounds great. I know you are leaning heavily into the wood aspect so I trust you. I did kinda think afterward that Bakelite might break down quickly around the axle.
Alright the current shape vibes a little too much so I’m adjusting the shape and weight distribution a little and printing some more testers.
Okay! We are officially doing this in some capacity. After talking with @Slestak75 heres what’s gonna happen. I’m going to print some more testers to refine the shape to make sure it plays then I’m going to order some prototypes from the machine shop.
Once prototypes are done and approved I’ll do a production run and all proceeds above the cost to produce them will be donated to the Social Work fund of Salem VA Hospital.
Best thread of the year
Amazing how this has all come together!
Watching magic happen before our eyes. Looks classic already.
great job! ![]()
If an unresponsive version ever happens I’d love to give it a whirl. Very impressive watching this thread evolve!
I’m chatting with Steve, and going to make the production versions fit his vision. Big bearing, small bearing, fixie, unresponsive, responsive, whatever he wants most I’ll try to make it happen.
I will be 3d printing some unresponsive c bearing versions for fun too though either way.
Heck yeah, I’m in for certain!
Responsive bakelite micarta and a mini unresponsive copper? These sound like a cool pair.
We’re gonna go c bearing in the big one, mr85 in the mini. I’ll throw a flying lemon bearing in the protos for the mini and see but it’ll probably be responsive unless that happens to amazing. The c bearing full size will be probably unresponsive but this will be the first time my shop does an unresponsive, it might end up being responsive depending on machining tolerances, so as usual it will be an adventure.
This thread has been an adventure already!
Exciting either way. Would love to print one and see how it is
Once the printable version files are nailed down I’ll post them up for folks to make their own!
Will there be fixie printable file? I’d love to make one with a steel axle and pr85 style pads.
Yes! I’m reprinting fixie and c bearing versions right now with the modified design to test them. Once both are ready I’ll share them!
This is DOPE!![]()

Somehow in all the uproar I missed this little gem. Holy Guacamole!!! THAT IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!
Steve’s sig yoyo the little acorn
The re-profiling has fixed the balance issues.
For the c bearing 3d printable I did something silly, I added some threads inside the cup and made threaded acorn caps.
Need to put together a parts list before I post the files up.
Forgive my lame skills I don’t play much unresponsive
but proof of unresponsiveness on the printed version. Probably the noisiest yo-yo I’ve ever made though lol
