Hey guys I post on a couple other forums as elMalo/elBueno. 21, just got back into yoyoing Sept. 08. Favorite throws are the project and 5 star. My best trick is probly the white buddha. I just really liek having the yoyo move somehow, mostly with some form of hop.
Hello everyone I’m kevlar14, I’ve been using the yo-yo on and off since sixth grade (now a freshman). Got into it by visiting the National Yo-Yo museum down in Chico CA (drove three miles for my bros lacrosse game, they lost but hey, I got something out of it). This time I hope to stay committed. I have a Fireball and Raider, but I’ve just recently purchased a Dark Magic (loving it!). I’m an intermediate entering advanced yo-yo’er and my favorite tricks are thumb grinds.
While I’m here, I have a few questions. To help I use my yo-yo 30-60 min a day.
- How often should I lube my yo-yo?
- How often should I clean the bearing?
- Why are there blackened metal shavings/gunk in the axle?

- Well, if you clean your bearing, then you should usually lube it just slightly afterward.
- Well, you don’t have to clean your bearing, and it isnt very recommended, however if you do, it can vary. Usually when I keep my bearings shielded I clean about once a month. If I keep them deshielded I clean them about once every two weeks.
- I dont get what you are saying - can you be more detailed?
Hmm I’m not sure how to explain it…I’ll try to get some pictures.
- Once every 4 months maybe? There is no realy way to just say every 1000 hours you play with it you need to lube the bearing. If you decide to clean your bearing lube it with yyj thin lube after that but really no other time is it necessary unless you feel your bearing is going to lock up because you have played with your yoyo a lot over the past couple months.
- I never clean my bearings. If you really want to just clean it once when you get it.
- This could result from you cross threading the axle in. Don’t worry to much about it just shake out the little pieces.
Also depending on what yoyo you have it could be glue from when the manufacture put the yoyo together. (they put glue on the axles to keep them in place.)
Ah that explains also why my string is black at some parts. Thanks for your help Runnen and Samad!
