Can someone tell me please if I this is what a proper magic drop should look like? I watched the yoyoexpert, yotricks, Brandon vu, and Diego b video and I still am slightly unsure what exactly a rejection looks like. I am going off comparing screen shots from videos and it seemed it looked like this but Im not sure. I’m confused on the whole trick after watching multiple different opinions.
Looks correct to me! You should be able to drop your throwhand index finger and get back in a trapeze (shockwave is a good trick to learn as well that comes right after magic drop)
Note that a rejection is just another element class (e.g. whip, hop, bind, etc.), so there’s many ways to do it. A rejection is when you push one of the strings up against the side of the yoyo, causing it to be “flung”/“popped” from the yoyo. Magic drop is just a simple example of this concept, as when you roll the yoyo over your throwhand the string will reject because you pull it with your throwhand thumb. Here’s a more advanced one at 0:33 in this video: https://youtu.be/eNTKpaZiSF0?t=33
EDITING TO NOTE THE FOLLOWING POST IS BAD ADVICE! BUT LEAVING AS IS SINCE THE ERROR IS REFERRED TO LATER BUT I’M WRONG HERE:
Actually you landed on the wrong string you should reject and land with a trap over your throw hand finger. Should look like this:
Ah I see. Thank you both for the help. I landed with a twist in my none throw hand a few times. Which one is it that I need to do shockwave? This is tough to get consistent. Is it possible to reject properly and just be landing on both strings? I noticed a few times if I picked up my yoyo from both strings and put it on one it was the proper position and other times I did that it was different with more strings attached… I ask because I’m not sure if I’m doing it right and just landing on two strings or if I’m just completely missing.
Thanks again for taking the time to help. This is probably the most confusing trick if gotten to get.
Definitely possible to reject and land on either the front, the back, or both. Most people struggle with getting the string to actually reject, so if you’re past that part, the hard part is over!
Shockwave involves landing on the back string and then rotating your throwhand inwards towards you (your throwhand index finger should basically be pointing directly towards you). Then you roll over your nonthrowhand onto the string between the yoyo and your index finger (which should now be the closer of the two to you), and then drop your throwhand index finger to land in a trapeze.
Yeah I lied my bad! Magic drop does land on the back string my pic is wrong I am landing it on the front string because I like this ninja vanish move you can do from there.
However your original pic IS right you are landing properly on the back string.
I apologize for the confusion!
Great tut here for magic drop…
Thanks! Yeah I think I’m actually getting the rejection part but I’m landing on both strings. I seen in the yotricks video he says to tilt your hand down and to the left to spread the strings apart but I’m still messing up sometimes. It feels really cool when it does land just on one string properly. I’m going to work on getting this down and then move on to shockwave. I think it’s going to take me a few days to get consistent with landing this one from the looks of it.
I really appreciate both your guys help a lot. Thanks
Yeah bro! Now it’s just repetition you got it. Sorry again for the confusion!
Well I got a lot better understanding of what is a rejection and what isn’t a rejection. I also figured out shockwave.
One thing driving me crazy that I seen some others have issues with is landing on the correct string. I seen things like point the NTH down to the left, position the NTH forward or backward, and put fingers inside the trapeze. The one that works seems to be fingers in the trapeze but I’m not.sure if that is possible to do when doing a repeater like shockwave.
Anyone have good advice on how to land the yoyo on the string you want for magic drop?
I personally use my non-throwhand thumb to spread the loop of the trapeze on your non-throwhand index finger while doing the magic drop, giving you two distinct strings. I also find myself rotating my NTH down away form me when doing it. I’ve seen people also use their middle/ring/pinky on NTH to expand the loop.
Thanks ill give it a shot. I just tried something I saw in a video about positioning my hands off set one closer and one further and vice versa to aim which string I’ll land on. Didn’t have much luck. Started to get frustrated. I need a break for a little hah.
