The Hummingbird II is the long awaited sequel to one of yoyofriends’ most iconic designs. Originally released in 2017, the Hummingbird stood out with its wrapped stainless steel ring and fast, powerful feel, earning its place as a true classic in the yo-yo community.
Hummingbird II brings that classic design into the modern era while preserving the essence that made the original special. The iconic center hub and cup design remain, maintaining the familiar feel and visual identity. To meet modern standards, the width has been increased to 48mm and the gap widened to 4.54mm for improved forgiveness and compatibility with thicker strings.
The stainless steel ring has been redesigned with a steeper slope, pushing more weight to the outer rim for greater power and stability. The overall weight has been increased to around 65g, prioritizing spin strength and control while offering a more planted feel on the string.
After extensive prototyping and testing, the final design reached a balance that clearly justified an upgrade without straying too far from the original. Built from 7075 aluminum, Hummingbird II delivers modern performance with the familiar feel players remember.
This thing plays very much like a generic competition bimetal yoyo™ to me. I have not had the chance to play the original but it had to have much more personality than it’s successor to be so well regarded I think.
Got mine. I do agree with @Tempura in that it feels more like the average competition bi metal which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because the majority of YYFr comp bimetals are so good. The Hummingbird 1 is one of my favorites to date and it played uniquely fast and very agile. As the Hummingbird 2 grew in width it was bound to gain some weight so i don’t fault YYFr, it’s as good as a follow up rendition to the original Hummingbird can be while trying to retain its original dna
We have thought of all this. In the beginning I thought of keeping it light. However we have faster and better performing yoyo at that weight range. The Tachyon and Melzi. That is why we picked around 65g and 48mm. Which apparently is too light and too narrow for a trendy competition yoyo now. Yoyos are evolving fast as high 50mm to 60mm are more competition oriented now. I really want a drastic increase in performance while not go fully into competition yoyo.
That was my initial reaction as well. My sweetspot is actually around 49-50. It was 47mm as my signature is the overclock. However modern yoyo tricks has evolved. I want my players to succeed using yoyofriends yoyo and have just as much if not more advantage if they require it. So we definitely will be doing around 60mm wide in the future. However we still have alot of project that’s below 50mm for sure. Also some fun yoyos as well.
