How to stop worrying about damaging yo-yos

I have always been the type of person that tries to take very good care of my belongings, I am like this specifically with my guitars, cameras and yo-yos. I was throwing my OD sugar glider today and it hit the carpet Luckily, no dings or any marks were present, but I put it back in the case and I’m hesitant to throw it again. How do you guys overcome trying to baby certain yo-yo in your collection?

What I do is buy one yoyo that’s worth a lot more than the rest of my collection so I wouldn’t feel too bad when damaging the relatively cheaper ones. I now play 95% of my yoyos however I want without fear of damaging them. Or I guess you could just buy more yoyos so an individual won’t value too much to you

I buy a lot of my yoyos second hand, at a discount, thanks to someone else already doing some damage.

I still take good care of them, but it really takes the edge off knowing they already have some love marks.

Yeah this is a great point !

Yeah i think Its always gonna be a thought , damaging something brand new is not ideal but it sitting in a case is worse .

If you drop your camera on the ground, you’re worried that you just broke an extremely expensive piece of hardware. A high end camera isn’t something that’s built to withstand abuse, so you need to be careful and deliberate with your handling of it.

Yoyos are not cameras. They’re made out of a strong material, with strong parts, and built to take abuse. People seem so scared of little dings and scuffs. That kind of damage is just cosmetic. You’re not breaking your yoyo, and you’re not taking poor care of your yoyo. You’re just using it for the intended purpose (playing yoyo).

This isn’t to say people should be excited to damage their yoyos, but to instead say that the “damage” from floor hits is more or less cosmetic. You’re not breaking your yoyos with dings. Maybe you’ll give them some vibe, but that isn’t going to make them play any worse. Vibe is so negligible for actually playing yoyo. Yoyos are durable. So when drops happen… it’s really not a big deal. Don’t obsess over trying to find marks or anything on it or worrying that you broke it (because you didn’t). Just restart it, and then immediately return to playing yoyo.

I also tend to divide my yoyos into 2 categories:

    1. the “players” category, consists of 95% of my yoyos. I pick them up and play whenever I feel like it, because they were bought to be played and each of them has a unique feel on string. I do cherish them but still play normally and never feel too bad when they get damaged despite their value
    1. the “stuff I’m just happy to own” category, consists of 5% of my yoyos. I almost never play with these since they were bought mostly due to the looks or the meaning behind them. I’d feel pretty bad if they are damaged

Step 1: Tell your yoyo to stop, and say that if it keeps going there will be further consequences.
Step 2: Give the yoyo some water so it stays hydrated.
Step 3: Replace your yoyo with a brand new yoyo.
Step 4: Fight square on with your yoyo.
Step 5: Tell the yoyo that you will tell your mother what the yoyo has been doing.
Step 6: Go drink some water so you will stay hydrated.
Bonus: “Don’t worry. Its gonna be alright”

All the yoyos I buy, I play.

Some are pocket yoyos that go everywhere. Dings, dents and marks are battle trophies of their life and love. They are not disrepected just loved.

Then I have my “Play with Care” yoyos. These are Nostalgic, Sentimental pieces that see play at some time during the month. Always played over carpet and in very controlled ways.

Where I am at with my play, yoyos that travel with me, or yoyos used to learn WILL get dinged Marked.

Accepting this early aids in the enjoyment of the new and learning.

If you have a special yoyo, “Handle with Care”.

Get one ding on the yoyo. Two things will happen:

  1. Future dings won’t feel as bad, as you won’t be worrying about dinging the mint condition yoyo. A yoyo cannot be used regularly and stay in mint condition.
  2. You’ll still like the yoyo and realize it doesn’t matter that much.

This same principle applies to the many different types of beautiful, but functional, toys, instruments, and tools that people buy. It’s almost a relief to get that first imperfection, it’s like a burden is lifted.

Just accept it. Metal yoyos are pretty hard to break from hitting on stuff ime. I think like sure don’t use a Yoyo if you plan to resell it but if you bought a Yoyo to play and work on new stuff with like that’s just the nature of yoyos. They’re gonna get dinged up eventually. Some tricks are just like hard to avoid sending a Yoyo into the ground when you learn them. If you’re playing over carpet I think you’re pretty well protected also.

Another one is to not damage the yoyo. Yoyos are like people: thou people shall not hurt.

I do have a broken grasshopper though (some of you guys know about this one
But ever since that one broke, i never really had anything to do with it, so for a little bit, i just had it for display until my instrusive thoughts kicked in and I completely became a barbarian and took the rims off :grimacing:

Personally, It took me a long time… who am I kidding I do not like to damage my throws… but to avoid this I have a close to mint collection and a dinged less than mint working collection.

I would say spend money on what you enjoy.

I try and get at least 2 good Ano splashes if possible for my collection, and get less than mint pre-dinged usually solid a 3rd splash I did not care for as much as the others.

My 2 Pennie’s

Everyone have a great rest of the week

Yo-yo are to have fun with.

Yo-yos are toys.

People play with toys.

Playing with ‘any’ toy is supposed to fun or what’s the purpose?

A yo-yo is classified as a Skill Toy.

In the course of throwing around Skill Toya, accidents happen. They are to be expected and accepted. Mishaps are part of the Learning curve.

…If…… you become a little too preoccupied with damaging yo-yos then here is your problem>

Living in fear is not living. Playing with fear is not having fun.

Buy yo-yos within your budget. Don’t invest your life savings in one yo-yo that you will be afraid to throw even over carpet.

Take one yo-yo out of the box… put your Fear into that empty box…. And have fun throwing…

I play all my yo-yos but I value some more than others and feel a gut punch when they get a ding. I baby some things as they are more collector pieces than others but if it dings it dings. I’m not carrying a mat with me everywhere and I don’t have a square of carpet in my home so things get marks over time.

YoYo club often beats my yo-yos up for me or I buy second hand and the dings are done for me which like others have said is freeing.

Still some items i get I try really hard to keep in good condition for as long as possible and it’s inevitable I’ll feel that gut punch eventually

If you are home, play over a carpet. Sometimes, I also put big couch pillows on the floor around me, specially around me. I have yoyos for a year or even 18 months that I have never dinged.

I suggest that you do not play outside with yoyos that you deem precious.

Other than that, as someone else has said in this forum, the first ding will liberate you.

Someone said: “Let the ding set you free”

Do not worry about damage them, as someone said here it’s 90% of the time just cosmetic, also think that probably some pieces you have are just mass produced, you not owning anything rare or really expensive.
Just go into the mentality that you playing with them as is more the adventure and the good time you pass throwing that the yoyo itself, you can always replace a ding yoyo or buy a different one.

Just play and learn tricks without think at the equipment, is not that important at the end of the day, if rotate and feels nice, than play with it, also I tend to get affectionated to some yoyos that I ding, it feels like “lived” and is a nice feeling.

If you have very rare stuff or very expensive you can throw on a carpet at home, ding it on a carpet is not gonna affect at all also the cosmetic side, you can divide your collection between “throw everywhere” and “throw at home”

Have fun and do not get worried about any of those ding stuff!
