How to decide where a topic goes:

I have noticed lately that a LOT of topics have been in the wrong place, so here is Mista8eight8’s guide to choosing a forum section.

Now, first realize your topic’s topic:

Are/do you:
-Looking for help?
-Promoting a product?
-Asking a general question to the community? (what is your favorite yoyo, weight, etc.)
-Starting a forum game?
-Giving a review?
-Is the topic about a trick?
-Showing off a video?
-Showing off a mod/asking how to mod?
-Have a question about maintenance?
-Posting pictures of your gear?
-Have yoyo related art?
-Have any art?
-Looking for nearby members/clubs/video battles/contests?
-Discussing yoyo news/yoyo debates
-Merchant yoyos?
-Found a glitch?
Now lets break these down:

I am looking for help:
What kind of help? If you are trying to find music/yoyo/bearing etc. recommendations, put the topic in the Looking For Help/Recommendation section. A common misconception is that because the review section says “Child boards: Looking For Help/Recommendation” that you can put the topic in the review section and that will be taken to the LF:H/R section. This is wrong. You have to either:

1: Click the link under the review section that brings you to the LF:H/R (the red text that says: Looking for Help/Recommendation)

Or

2: Click the review page and at the top of the page, it will say: “Child boards, Looking For Help/recommendation” and click the red “Looking For Help/recommendation” text that will bring you to the page.

I am promoting a product:
If it is a video promotion, put it in the video section, if it is a text promotion, put it in the general yoyo forum section. If it is both, video section.
NOTE: If you have a manufacturer’s topic, feel free to post promotions in that thread.

I am asking for the community’s general opinion (polls, etc.):
General yoyo forum, however, if it is something like “favorite band”, put it in the Unrelated Discussion.

I am starting a forum game:
Unrelated discussion, the only forum game in general discussion is “you know you’re obsessed with yoyoing when…”

I am giving a review:
If the review is of a yoyo or yoyo related product (a bearing, for example) than it goes into the review section. If it is of non-yoyo related meterial (movies, games etc.) than it goes into the unrelated discussion.

I have a tutorial, new trick, need a breakdown, have a question about a trick:
If you have a trick related topic, it goes into the trick section. There are some misconceptions about the video section. If you post a video in the trick section and are asking how to do a certain part, or posting a video of your new trick, that is not considered to be a yoyo video.

How to tell if my post is a video or a trick?
A trick post usually contains a single or a couple tricks/tutorials. A video usually contains several tricks put together smoothly so that the video has several tricks in it, usually accompanied by editing and/or music. Tutorials are part of the trick section. If you post a freestyle and ask for a breakdown of it, it is considered a trick genre. If you post a freestyle to show others what happened (right after a competition for example) then it is a yoyo video. If you have a yoyo blog, it is a yoyo video. If you have a regular blog, it is unrelated.

I am showing off a video:
See “How to tell if my post is a video or a trick?

I want to show off my mod/want to learn how to do a mod:
Modification/Maintenance

I have a question about maintenance.
First of all, what is maintenance? Maintenance is a question about how to take care of your bearing, how to tune your yoyo etc. Those kinds of posts go in the Maintenance section. It is a common misconception that those posts go into the LF:H/R section. They don’t. Questions like “why does my bearing spin less now?” go into Maintenance. “My yoyo is suddenly responsive” goes in the LF:H/R section.

I have yoyo related art:
Art goes into the Yoyo Exhibition’s childboard “yoyo artwork”, no posts go directly into the Exhibition section. This includes photos.

I have yoyo gear (cases, etc.) photos:
Photos go into Yoyo exhibition’s childboard: Yoyo display case, not to be confused with yoyo artwork.

I want to find players/local or video competitions/clubs in my area:
Put an ad up in the contests/clubs/events section. Should look like: LF: (area) players or LF: video battle etc. VIDEO BATTLE VOTING GOES IN THE VIDEO SECTION!

I want to debate/discuss current topics:
General yoyo forum

I want to merchant yoyos:
Buy sell trade, PLEASE, only have one thread for everything, it saves time, space and bandwidth.

I found a glitch:
Post it in the improvements section and it will be fixed.

General yoyo forum:General Yo-Yo - YoYoExpert
Yoyo tricks:Yo-Yo Tricks - YoYoExpert
Yoyo reviews and LF:H/R:Yo-Yo Reviews - YoYoExpert
Yoyo videos:Yo-Yo Videos - YoYoExpert

Yoyo Exhibition/Artwork/Showcase:Yo-Yo Mods and Maintenance - YoYoExpert
Buy/Sell/Trade:Buy / Sell / Trade - YoYoExpert
Unrelated:Unrelated Discussion - YoYoExpert
Improvements:YoYoExpert Site Improvements - YoYoExpert

None of these scenarios apply to you?
Well, if you can’t find a scenario that applies to you on the list at the top, here is what I do:
Start at the bottom and work your way up. Am I reporting a glitch? No? Next one, is this unrelated to throwing? No, next one, am I buy/sell/trading? No, next one, am I showing off yoyos/gear/yoyo art? No, next one, is this a question about maintenance/modding? No, next one, am I looking for contests/clubs/events? YES. Just keep moving on up until you find your section. The reason for moving bottom-up is that a lot of things may be considered “general” so if the topic does not fit in the below categories, it will go in general discussion.

For a little reference:
Help Threads:
tricks, looking for help/recommendation, modification/maintenance,

Chat threads:
general discussion, unrelated discussion,chatroom button

Showoff threads:
tricks,videos,modification and maintenance, exhibition

Suggestion/glitch report threads:

site improvements

Yoyo buying/selling/trading:
Buy/Sell/Trade

Socialization:
General discussion,unrelated discussion,Contests/clubs/events

If you are still not sure:

JUST ASK!! we wont bite…hard at-least (nah, I’m kidding)

Much needed. Thanks 888

A nice quality post. Good job, can I get a sticky?

Wow, I wasn’t done with the post and still got positive response,

Now, the post is finished!

Personally, I don’t think that ANY forum games should go into general discussion.

It is there to discuss whats going on in the community, and seek opinion.
