Graviti Vulcan

How do we feel about the Vulcan by graviti? I thought it looked interesting and I wondered if anyone has ever played this yo-yo before. Is it more on the light and fast side? Powerful? Floaty? Just plain weird?

I wouldn’t call it light and floaty. It is powerful and stable, and also feels pretty hefty, IMO.

Ok. Does it hurt your hand and would you say you like it?

No, it doesn’t hurt my hand at all. It’s shape is quite comfortable. I think it is a very good yoyo, but mine rarely gets played (let’s just say I have way too many yoyos).

We all have this problem:joy::rofl::rofl:

The Vulcan is an interesting throw that plays differently from the other throws I have. I’ve got a review of it here on the store page at YYE. I own two.

It’s in between powerful and floaty, with an edge toward power. If the Speedaholic XX was a cloud and the Skyline was a rock then the Vulcan would be, like, an ear of corn.

The axle is 8mm, I made a custom axle for both of mine which come in at just under 9mm IIRC. I determined the length of each with a pair of calipers and some simple math. This was probably unnecessary but I have a thing against using a short axle where a longer one will fit, even if the longer one has to be handmade from a 10mm axle.

Blast finish is beautiful, the shape is one of the coolest looking yoyos in the game as far as I’m concerned. I love the sharp edges and aggressive cuts. One of the cuts in particular is what gives the Vulcan a good deal of it’s character in play, here’s a copy-and-paste from my store review:

"The aggressive cuts of the cross-section look very cool and are effective at minimizing string friction, HOWEVER this is where the one caveat comes in. The innermost tapered cut of the yoyo is very shallow, almost parallel to the bearing surface as you can see in pictures. This causes a tactile “click” every time the yoyo is landed on the string, since the string rides on that cut for a few thousandths of a second before dropping into the bearing gap.

I’m not a fast player so I enjoy the clicky landings, it gives the yoyo a unique character. but if extreme speed is your style it could theoretically slow you down. I’ve not noticed any drawbacks of the click personally. No accelerated string wear. I’ve been using Alphaline on this throw."

I need to correct myself from that review and say that the click only happens when you miss the string gap when landing the yoyo, if you land in the gap without the string touching the inner walls the click doesn’t happen.

Smoothness is average, just a hint of fingernail vibe. No detectable vibe in play, including finger grinds, thumb grinds and finger spins. This throw is awesome at thumb grinding BTW.

I find it to be not as comfortable as an organic-shaped throw or even a traditional H, but this is to be expected with an aggressive H shape. It definitely does not hurt my hand, the edges are smoothed off enough so that they don’t “cut” on the catch or throw.

Overall I really like my Vulcans, I have one in the Odyssey colorway and one in the Sunspot and they’re both beautiful and play exactly the same. I think it’s priced right for what it is at $55-65.

Mine gets thrown on a regular basis at home, and will usually find it’s way into the 6-pack that I build for an afternoon at the park. It’s different enough from my other yoyos that it’ll be sticking around in the collection for a while.

Thanks for the detailed review! Now all I need to do is decide between this and the orbital gtx for the same price. Which would you pick?

That would be a tough one, if I remember right the Orbital GTX has a pretty solid reputation. I can’t give you a direct comparison unfortunately, as I’ve never tried an Orbital.
