General Yoyo Thoughts

At this point I don’t even think ~45mm qualifies as wide. That’s basically average at this point. The Shutter is 44.5 and is on the narrow side for the Western yoyo world.

My recent acquisitions have really helped me refine my preferences even further than I already had. I don’t think I care for anything narrower than ~45.5 (preferably closer to 46.5) and anything under 55mm is too small for me. Even that is a little small, 56mm seems perfect, but I’d like to try something 57-58mm. I’m planning on grabbing @MarkD and @chaosgow ‘s Converge when it comes out, it’s 58 x 46 with an incredibly streamlined profile. I’ve always liked the idea of yo-yos with that shape, but most are like 42mm wide and that’s way too narrow for me.

Hope to be able to make those available early next year. Next on the list to produce for both of us, I think, but I’ve got models already made I gotta release first

Yeah that’s what Mark was saying which actually works out better for me, I’ve got a few Black Friday purchases to make but besides that i can’t justify spending too much more on yo-yos this year.

Do you guys have any definitive plans for colorways or a price range yet? Will the rainbow rims be on the production version?

Nothing concrete on price or colours yet. We have plans to make this fairly available though, since we think it’s going to be pretty popular once people try it. It’s something very special to play.

with all the variety out there, you’re not missing much, as good ad it is.

To be honest I really don’t think you are missing out on very much at all. Its not that it is bad or anything but it is nothing special either. I sold mine on a while back and haven’t missed it once.

People are saying you’re not missing much. I’d say it depends. If I ever buy a bimetal shutter or a Wangle, I’m not gonna buy it because it’s the best yoyo out there, I’m gonna buy because it’s GENTRY’s yoyo. Sort of like people by A-RT to support their players, I’d buy a shutter to support Gentry and to have the world yoyo champion’s sig.

The shutter is a great yoyo as well, a lot better than many other monos I’ve tried via feel, but I guess that’s subjective.

I am saying he is not missing much because I (think) I understand his taste in yoyos which is quite similar to my own

I’m kind of torn on some yo-yos I own…

I honestly throw Shutters 95% of the time probably, so most of my other yo-yos don’t see much use. And I’d love to be able to buy a Ti WA without spending 350$ straight from the bank. But I’m also worried if I sell my Gulch, Breeze, Death Adder, and Recogs that I’ll regret it later.

I’m okay with a lack of variety in my collection because I know what I like. I just don’t want to be sitting here a year from now like “oh i wish I still had that yo-yo.” I definitely want the Ti WA more than any of those yo-yos, it’s just that if I’m not throwing a Shutter variant I’m throwing my Vayder. I’d honestly rather have a 2nd Vayder over any of those.

Anyone here have a similar situation and end up selling? Did you end up regretting it?

I’ve been in and out of a lot of hobbies over the years…and I’m usually completely okay selling things from one hobby to invest in a new one.
But there are some things I’ve sold off that I really kick myself for.

I say if you’re afraid you’ll regret selling them off, and if it’s in anyway possible for you to come up with the money for the Ti-WA without stretching yourself too far…than do it. If you think you’ll regret getting rid of them, then you probably will at some point.

That’s just my opinion. It’s nice when I can sell things and spend a bunch on new hobbies…but dang…there’s a few things I’ve sold I really regret and wish I’d kept. I was being a bit too impatient and I probably could’ve come up with the money I wanted, or saved for it…if only I would’ve been a bit more patient.

Yeah I just have a problem looking at things I own that I don’t use and thinking about the money I spent on them. I don’t regret any of the stuff I’ve sold so far and I’d rather have stuff I don’t use to towards something I will. And with yo-yos I can only use one ( at least for 1A) at a time, and including all my Shutters and my Vayder, there are 9 yo-yos I’m going to pick up before any others. I’d love to have a second Vayder as well before they’re gone.

I’m also a person that struggles to get rid of stuff in general and that’s something I’m trying to work on. At the end of the day it’s just an object, if I’m not going to use it why not turn it into something I can use. A lot of these were impulse buys on some level and were purchased in the pursuit of finding my exact preferences given how much yo-yos changed in the time I was out of the game. So if I hadn’t bought them to begin with I’d have nothing to regret getting rid of.

And I’m not trying to discount the points you made, they’re all valid, I’m just throwing my thoughts out there to see if another perspective on them changes how I feel.

Oh no, I don’t feel like you’re trying to discount anything.
Almost everything I’ve sold I’ve had no regrets about. There’s really only a few things I do.
But absolutely…if you can sell some things you’re likely not going to get much use out of or enjoyment from to splurge on something awesome…that’s great!

I’m exactly at that place. I have some yoyos i like in my collection but a lot of those i don’t use at all lately. I’m constantly thinking between “I practically don’t use this yoyos and I could use the money better” vs “but this yoyos are cool and maybe one day I’ll want to use them and they’re not gonna be there”.

I keep forcing myself to think this but it’s hard sometimes. It’s not like an object can dictate my happiness, but having the facility of having said object or not makes you think about it in very greedy ways.

It’s definitely a weird spot to be in. Especially when, if we’re just talking 1A purposes, you really only need one. It’s such an odd attitude to think “yeah I have this item that fulfills this need I have, but I wish I still had this other object that fulfills that need. It’s not better (and it may actually be worse) I don’t enjoy it any more than the one I currently have, but I feel worse knowing I don’t have it.”

And you’re right it does feel like being greedy. Like I should be content having even just one, and would sell all but one if I really had to. But I don’t have to so I don’t want to.

I feel like this is is a topic some people here would have interesting thoughts on.

I like collecting though…so even if I’m not using one of my yos much, that’s okay, because it adds to my collection.
And I get a sense of pride and satisfaction in having this collection. It gives me pleasure.

You’re right that for 1a I only need 1 yo. But that’s just for the actual playing of this hobby. Collecting new throws is a whole different aspect of the hobby for me.

I’m sure you feel the same way about your Shutters. You only really need a couple…but dang it’s satisfying to have a collection of them!

Maybe one day I’ll say screw everything and put half of my collection for sale lol.

I just like having variety. Sometimes if I can’t land a trick, just trying with a different yo makes all the difference. And of course different throws are more suited to different styles. Since I haven’t really found my own style yet, I feel like I need more throws to experiment with.

A big part of scaling down my collection was dumping too similar stuff for more variety. Most of my yo-yos are very different now.

Of course, I’m not disagreeing, I still have way more than I need, and plenty of similar yo-yos that are redundant that I just want.
