It seems like everyone who is willing to drop coin on the newer Duncan lineup instead of the more boutique stuff seems to do nothing but gush about how great they are. Im willing to bet you all are right; these guys have been in it longer than anyone. I have the new Mayhem and it is an absolutely stellar organic and is basically a perfect mid-sized organic. Ironically enough (since it is machined by OD) I replaced the stock concave with a flat and it is just so much fun.
Easily my most well-rounded organic yoyo (not the same as favorite, but itās close). I got my eyes on an Exit 8 or a Yoshicuda X.
Well Duncanās stuff was pretty bad comparatively when I was getting into the game but they seem to have found a formula that works for them recently
There was bound to be a transition period for them around the paradigm shift into unresponsive yoyoing, but it looks like they finally caught back up.
When metals were becoming the standard (thanks YYF!) and Duncan and YoYoJam were hopping on board a little late it was weird to me how all these small companies (SPYY, ILYY, H-Spin, Werrd, CLYW, and all the various small brands that came and went) could produce high quality metals and apart from the trendsetter in YYF the bigger brands were having so much trouble.
The initial offerings from YYF and YYJ just felt cheap in comparison. The one that stood out was probably the original Mayhem, that was a pretty nice yo-yo but mostly only in comparison to the rest.
I wonder why it was so difficult. Maybe because they were trying to scale up production so quickly while keeping consumer cost down.
@eternalmetal itās surprising to me that it took this long. They were struggling ~ 7 years ago, Iād have thought it would only be a couple years before they found their footing.
iām 5"8 i use long string people say iām tall but iām not lol and my friend sent me some really short string it was really funny
Im not exactly sure if it took Duncan a full 7 years or not to catch up with the modern era, but maybe they just took the time to hone their version of the new era while just putting out the occasional placeholder in the meantime? idk, big companies take a longer time to adapt to trends typically, but once they figure it out they usually tend to nail it eventually.
Speaking of YYF, ive been playing more with the Edgeless, and I said before that it was perfect for what it is. Im gonna retract that statement until I dial it in. It would be perfect if it had tighter binds. There is a bind im working on that works perfectly on most other organics, and the wide gap in the Edgeless seems to be just a tad too much (since it is naturally very floaty due to the hollow design). I have an extra set of YYF blue pads that im thinking of putting into it, since my thick strings still arent doing the trick. I just hate to replace pads when they arent worn out. Opinions?
Yāall ever agree on a trade, sleep on it, then regret it the next day? Iāve always been one to cycle through yoyos every few months so I never really regret trades or miss yoyos too much. Hummingbird, VTWO, Masamune, etc. were all some of my favorites Iāve owned but I got rid of all of them after I had my fun with them but this ones hitting different
100%. Iām more confident in my sales and trades now but when I was younger and had less access to straight cash I definitely made some trades and sales I ended up regretting.
Which one are you regretting trading away?
I havent had the heart to get rid of a single yoyo since getting back into the hobby, so I havent had that problem yet.
As for my Edgeless problem, I decided to just change the pads and find out for myself. After putting the blue pads in while using Plutonium string, it has much better binds now. I think because it is a hollow design it just needs a grippier response system. Binds are great now
Edolass
Idk, in the moment I was thinking the trade was a pretty good deal value wise, I already had a Draupnir anyway, and I generally donāt have long term attachments to yoyos but the next day I was throwin it and was like āDang I really like this yoyoā and they never pop up on BST so if I wanted another one Iād have to drop another $150.
Only other time I really regret a deal was when I sold my OG Overdrive
Maybe when I start making 6 digits
Iām always wanting to try new things and my regular rotation is generally pretty small so I canāt really justify keeping a bunch of throws I rarely throw rn.
Itās the reason I mainly use BST, so I can constantly cycle in and out yoyos for similar values.
ā¦Except for most of my 3a pairs, Iāve definitely permanently lost a lot of money from those
You traded your Edolass?? I would neverā¦
Relevant to the question of āAre there too many yoyos being released these days?ā is this boardgame blog from last week. Replace āgameā with āyoyoā in the blog text and I think youāll agree that much of it applies to us.
I was particularly moved by his stated ethos of: āMake good games. Or more precisely, make a game that has a reason to exist.ā He questions the value of making a game that just duplicates what is already in the marketplace (where price is almost never a gameās unique selling proposition).
My main concern is the number of yoyoers out there. Is there anyone out there that has any data to indicate this? Itās not like itās just a bunch of smaller companies popping up. Some of those smaller brands are getting bigger (SF) and the already big brands are constantly releasing stuff. Which suggests to me their stuff is selling. Given that as far as I know weāre not in a yo-yo boom, there must be enough consumers out there to support the current level of production without an imminent risk of a severe decline in consumption. But we donāt know for sure, maybe we are at a peak in yoyo consumers and it will fall off a bit.,
At first I read this article title as if there was a board game named āBubbleā that people mistakenly thought was real.
Making something that has a reason to exist is good advice.
I completely agree. I think the binds are super slippy compared to every yoyo I have. Iām going to change out the pads in mine and see if that helps.
Worked for me. I put some blue pads in it and it responds how I want. Still have to use plutonium, but no big deal.
I have some Something Type 1 pads that I really like. Iām going to put those in and see how that works. I always use thick string so no problem there. Iām short and I have a theory that short people need thick strings for better binds haha.
I put the Something Type 1 pads in my Edgeless and it binds like a champ now. Night and day difference. I love it now.
