How does a fixed axle bind (responsive)? I have a picture of an old Duncan Tournament that no longer binds at all. The string never gains purchase.
The axle is polished smooth as well as the inner face of both halves. Can I try roughing up the axle and/or the inner sides? Should I replace the axle?
I do a bunch of fixed axle bind in here. Totally stock butterfly, all i did was put a kitty fat on there and all the sudden i needed to bind it. And worked pretty well, not too many snags.
A Duncan friction sticker or TK turbo disk might be an easy solution. Not sure it that would make the response too aggressive or not. The only downside is that those are probably better suited for take-apart yo-yos since they would need to be replaced eventually.
If it was me, I would drill a few shallow response holes and replace the axle.
The faces did not have anything on them when I twisted the yoyo apart. The axle is polished very smooth by play. The first thing I am going to try at this point is some thicker. It is quick and easy. I will also order some stickers and maybe just try and stick some response pads on in the meantime.
The polished axle is your main issue here. Even with smooth walls the axle should provide enough friction in most circumstances. Iirc @vegabomb doesn’t use any wall response, and my favorite wenge from @RC_yo-yo also looks smooth on the walls. I’d try replacing the axle first, and if it’s still not to your liking start thinking about wall holes or stickers/pads.
I would take some 220 grit sandpaper to the axle very lightly. If the axle doesn’t provide enough resistance to bind the way you want then the gap may be too wide. You don’t want the walls rough or friction pads unless you don’t want it to sleep well.
Roughing up the axle mostly did the trick. I use some thick string as well. It started out totally responsive but after a number of throws and forward passes it stated to have some hang time.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. I just want to keep around to throw for old times sake.
If an axle is too rough. Remove the string, wrap the string around the axle twice and put a little pressure on the string while you pull it through and it will buff the axle. Don’t do it too much or too aggressively or else it will polish your axle and it won’t respond
