Reviving a thread for a simple question: Ascent or Arrow? I’ve heard both are good, and very popular, but I don’t know which one to get.
Honestly you cant go wrong with either. They both have conversions from responsive to unresponsive included out the box, and play pretty well. I personally prefer the ascent though, but the arrow is a bit more comfortable to hold
The offset ascent is a rebranded/white labeled magicyoyo k2, so if you arent tied to the offset branding, you can save a couple bucks and get that. Magicyoyo also tends to bundle in some extra strings and a case.
I started with a Magic YoYo V3 which was convertible (this was after picking up my son’s Butterfly XT). I was a bit nervous to throw unresponsive because of the bind and not having much control. I finally decided to go all in until I got it, and I really don’t have much in the way of responsive anymore.
For the question, if you’re interested in unresponsive, I would recommend the C3 Speedaholic XX. It’s a fantastic plastic, and is around $30. That throw can hold it’s own with metals that are north of $100. It’s machined delrin (?) so it is far better than a molded plastic. The nice thing about it is if you only wind up with one throw, it’ll be a great one. While the V3 was solid, I haven’t thrown it in about two years. Whereas I just deleted the new version of the XX out of my cart because I told myself I didn’t need a new throw . Incidentally, I bought the Speedaholic MN because of how good the XX is.
the only answer you’ll ever need to any “which yoyo” question is very simple, the one you think looks neat and gets you excited to play with it. that’s it. everything about a yoyo and your interaction with it is completely subjective and there will never be a right or wrong answer. you and the time you put into learning will drastically outweigh any other factor in the equation. just look at the sheer number of tricks created over time with some beater that barely even played without heavy modding.
if your goal is collecting, worry about what yoyo you get. if your goal is playing and learning tricks, don’t overthink it. just get something and get to work!
Plastic Fulvia is also a great choice. I gave one to a friend and have been fighting temptation to buy another.
Probably picking up an Ice Blue in the near future, I think about it frequently lol
Speedaholic XX is polycarbonate.
Its my favorite plastic, and the 2024 series is fantastic.
Speedaholic XX for plastic.
Metal i would go shortcut or for 50mm i would go ultracut. All these handle extremely well for learning and not feeling like you need to upgrade after a few weeks
Thank you! I decided to go for Speedaholic XX. Looking forward to learning more!
I have been having problems finding this yoyo. (Speedaholic XX) Does anybody know where to get it? Or am I just bad at looking for things…
I don’t know about it being the same but looking at them both the are very very similar so now I’m unsure.
I have owned both and can say with full confidence they are the same mold. The transparent k2 crystal is slightly heavier than the glow in the dark ascent probably due to different plastics, but shape wise, theyre the same (and a beginner wont notice a couple grams)
I also just went down a rabbit hole. Offset’s first plastic, the variant, was a partnership with myy. In the vlog where brandon announced the ascent, thet came in the same shipment as the variant, and he mentioned its an existing yoyo that they put new artwork onto.
That being said. I love my ascent. Its small enough to pocket, its fun, and its indestructible. My vote for starter yoyo is usually going to be the ascent/k2 because i still play with mine frequently
