Favorite Retro Gaming Handheld/What's Everyone Playing?

Another handheld joins my squad of handhelds… Miyoo Mini V4!

Lately I’ve been playing this guy. Been playing a lot of Kirby and Mario Land 2.

Other than the OG DMG-01 my primarily played handheld is the PS Vita. I absolutely love this system so much. I got it at launch way back in 2011 and it’s still a little beast. Sometimes I stream the PC to it so I can play steam games, sometimes remote play with the PS4. Sometimes homebrew and ports and of course all of the amazing native games as well.

I’ve had kind of a vibe going the past few days.

Nabbed a Miyoo Plus a bit ago for longer at home gaming sessions. Nothing like feeling like I’m back in middle school again with the anime and a modified version of Fire Red known as Ash Gray, where you play as Ash and all of the events from the anime happen.

So how do those work, recently found out about them but their site has little to no info about them. Is there a site you download games from? Any issues you’ve seen or heard of?

There used to be, then everyone started talking about it and made it a target.

Also, I wouldn’t recommend sharing sites on here, at least, not in public

Yeah basically, the device itself is kinda like a mini computer in a way. How is come out the box… is ok. But it’s how you set them up that makes them great. Ditch the stock setup, there’s a few different operating systems you can use. All community made. Then you load it up with emulators and ROMS.

And in case you don’t know what those are. A quick and non technical version is emulators are digital consoles and ROMS are digital versions of games.

For example a PS1 emulator is called Duckstation. The ROMs can be found on many different sites, they are ISO(ps1 games are normally ISO) files that you put on an SD card. They are getting harder to find (mostly the nintendo stuff) since these handheld emulator machines have gotten popular. The sites are being taken down left and right, to a degree.

Me personally, i have an external harddrive FULL of roms i have collected (downloaded) over the years, from snes, gameboy, DS, ps1, dreamcast, gamecube, ps2, the list goes on. I honestly have a pretty wild digital collection i have curated over the years.

And technically, it’s all illegal. But i’m a criminal. and a justified one because alot of these games you just can’t get due to being very expensive and or rare with no way to even buy a digital version on modern hardware. Some may not agree with my view on this but. It is what it is.

If there’s any banger games you’re looking for and can no longer find a ROM download for it, i most likely have it on me harddrive. I prepared for this day. :sunglasses: and i also have given nintendo, sony and sega so much money over the years, i don’t feel bad about downloading the games that i simply can not buy from them otherwise. And i ain’t paying a monthly subscription to access them either because those can be taken away at any time too.

Sorry i went off track there. But that’s how these devices work. Lol

I’m more inclined to say it’s a grey area. Calling it straight up illegal is propaganda brought to you by litigious companies (like Nintendo). I would be more inclined to call it illegal if those same companies actually tried to re-release their old games on newer platforms or would stop taking measures to make playing old games nearly impossible. Same goes for other forms of digital media. But I’m a data hoarder and novice, low-effort archivist at heart and a lot of media companies have no problem overwriting/deleting old stuff to make room for new stuff just to save a couple bucks (lookin’ :eyes: at you BBC)

I agree. It’s an issue when you rightfully pay for something and then they delete it off of the server or de-list it so you no longer have public access to it. It’s a whole thick sludgy mess to wade through.

Some try to make the argument that you’re only paying to gain access or are only paying for the license and they can change it how they see fit. But what about physical media? They aren’t going to come to your home and take back that blu-ray if they decided you should no longer have it or if the licensing deal on their end expires. Why is digital media treated any differently? If you bought the physical media, you’re free to do with it what you want. It is now your property. You can rip it, archive it, duplicate it, throw it in a blender, use it as a coaster, etc. The only thing you’re not allowed to do is redistribute those copies for a profit.

There are so many games, movies, music, and books that are going to vanish if they are never preserved. These companies don’t give a squat about preserving anything unless it makes them tons of money. If they can’t milk it dry, they have no desire to re-release it or make it accessible. There are SO many classic games that have yet to be ported or made accessible.

We’re now seeing issues with old game carts (and systems) where the roms are degrading, capacitors leaking and destroying the pcb, save batteries dying and wiping out all progress, discs delaminating and corrupting and becoming unreadable. It’s a real issue and we’re the only ones that care enough to try to rescue and preserve these things. It’s all art, it’s history, it’s someone’s long long hours being poured into a project for months and even years. It’s just insane to me that they can just click a button and it basically gets erased from existence because some stupid a-hole company doesn’t want to license it anymore.

It also boggles my mind how we (humans) give priority to certain things and not others.

There’s no issue when they find a clay bead in the mud from some indigenous tribe or paintings from a well known painter from certain eras, music from certain eras, books and ancient manuscripts from ye’old world eras. All of these things have been given priority to be preserved and respected. (which I totally feel they should!) But. Somehow, media created within the last 40 years seems to not matter at all.

What’s crazy is there’s always that notion of, “why didn’t they do better to preserve these ancient books” when looking at ancient texts. They didn’t realize what value it had back then and the historical significance it had. We are now way more aware of these things and we have the means to preserve and archive in ways that past generations didn’t. Yet, it’s given no priority, it’s an afterthought, or it simply doesn’t matter. We as a species long to know the history of previous generations, ancient societies and the way of life of old centuries past. We try to preserve and protect and understand all of the physical relics of the past, but if it’s digital or 60 years old, it doesn’t matter.

I don’t get it.

This is why the internet archive (and other like-minded organizations) needs all of the support it can get and why we all as consumers, collectors, and mini archivists (digital hoarders? :stuck_out_tongue: ) should be actively trying to save and protect these medias because they can go away at the blink of an eye or even worse, be rendered inaccessible due to crazy DRM restrictions or antiquated and unsupported file formats.

Trueee. Grey area is moe accurate… what would be illegal is if i burned ps1 games like i do for my self, but then sold them to others for profit. Which i would never do. If you wanted a burned PS1 game, i would burn it and just give it to you for free, and gladly, but i’d never take money for it. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

I just like calling myself a criminal because i think it’s funny. Haha

hey guys, i haven’t read this whole thread but i’ve skimmed enough to be curious. i have some questions:

~if you hack a 3ds, can you use roms for snes? or only 3ds games? perhaps this is the benefit of dedicated emulation handhelds like the retroid ones?
~what’s a good starter handheld?
~will i regret getting a new adhd hyperfocus?

  1. You can, but I’m not super familiar with the specifics. A quick google search gave me hacking guide and emulators
  2. Idk about a handheld, but I will say if all you want to do is emulate retro games, Steam Deck is wayyy too much. That said, if you want to play games AND emulate retro games, then I would high recommend the Steam Deck (haven’t used the alternative copycats, but if you prefer not to learn another OS/prefer windows (for whatever reason), then I’d give the Ally or Legion Go a shot).
  3. How can you regret if you forget about it in two years :man_shrugging:

Edit: added the correct homebrewing guide link

Thank you!

I have a steam deck but it uh… isn’t exactly pocket friendly. i already had a 3ds too so i wanted to start there.

The 3DS can run emulators for various old consoles. The New 3DS is the best one to use for this.

Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games can also be run using the 3DS’s native modes for them.

So I’ll just need another emulator, that’s no big deal.

NO RAGRETS

Dope! Agreed. SD is not pocket friendly, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a retro game that doesn’t run on it (provided the game can be played at all on any particular emulator)

It looks like you can run other consoles, to a point, NES seems to be fully functional, but SNES, may be hit-or-miss and N64 is almost certainly out of the question. Honestly, unless you’re pressed for cash, I would get a device specifically for emulating. Also, pay attention not only to the consoles that run, but also specific games the device can run. Just because it says it supports N64, doesn’t mean every game will run flawlessly

As for which hardware, a lot of people in this thread have already shown and given specifics. Maybe look for whichever seems to be the most popular and go with that one, or even do a little research to see if it hits the targets your looking at

Think i may have found the most fun but difficult video game in the world :joy: an anime souls like game called The First Berserker.

Has anyone else attempted to beat this one yet? I’m about half way through and it makes dark souls look like a walk in the park :joy:
