whats your edc choice, but more importantly, why? is it cheap, is it the design/shape, any bi metal edc champions out there? im still not able to play favorites for very long, if i ever will, so I’m curious what makes ppl lock in to a choice. also, when you get home, do you drop off your edc and pick up a shelf queen?
just to be clear, I’m not asking for advice, just the psychologist in me makes me wonder what drives others’ behavior. tia!
ill start by sharing my habbits. i dont have an edc. i am usually taking my exia or pano. i fear for my exia out in the wild, but i can’t do as much with the pano, so it depends on which feeling is more dominant when i leave. i play both of them almost exclusively at home too. and then some days are responsive days. admittedly, as i type i realize i do always carry my confusion on responsive days
As edc I have a Yoyofriends - Overclock, I have a couple of them so I do not worry to ding it to death, also is a very performing yoyos so it is good for everything I want to do, I do not need to bring anything else when I am out.
At home I keep playing with it or sometimes I love to take my Unprld - SU1 which I want to keep immaculate or play with other Yoyofriends yoyos on rotation depend of the day or which combo I am creating but in general I have no expensive yoyos, no shelf queen or similar stuff my collection is quite awful actually lol
Sometimes I do like to throw the new 888 at home just for fun, is a gift so I do not want to ding it.
More than the yoyo around I bring always a string ready to be changed and a bearing, with the UK weather a bearing can become responsive in a second
I’m glad you chimed in because i ran across your post from 2022 when you downsized you collection and its one of the things that got me thinking about this. interesting to know you are still on the smaller collection
It’s usually something different every single day. Even if I love a yoyo I can grow tired of it quickly if I throw it too much so I give it a break and bring something with me I have not thrown in awhile.
At the moment I have in total 20 yoyos and 14 are all the Yoyofriends sponsor stuff and prototypes, the rest I have left are gifts or memories nothing more than that.
At this point I feel like I do not need anything else, in the market there is A LOT I would like to try and have but I do not have the money for it so I can’t do anything about it.
At the end of the day I end up always playing with the sponsor stuff also to shape my combos to the yoyos I have and which I film with, other than is what I do like as well, I think I found a very good balance at the moment
you def seems to. i liked the comment you made in that other post about collecting less and playing more. I’ve found myself going more in that direction. and i agree, the collectors out there are hands down a key component as they support the companies financially and im eternally grateful when i DO find something irresistable. i was talking to @Solemn_Kaizoku recently about functional collections. I’m the guy that’s willing to collect as long as the things do different stuff but I’ve never been the collector that buys multiples, variants, complete sets, etc.
I keep a Jake Bullock Dink in the pocket when I go out. Undersized for the comfort, steel for the heartiness, and the thing is highly capable.
If I’m going to be out longer I usually have a go bag with a Plastic Fulvia hanging off of it.
I ditch them both when I’m home. Where I rotate the rest of my collection. One at a time, every few days is my current rotation cycle.
I don’t really have an EDC as I don’t usually take yo-yos with me when I leave the house (I don’t yo-yo at work and if I’m leaving the house for some other reason it’s probably either to enjoy time with my gf or be productive).
If I were to bring yo-yos with me I’d probably take my Skyva and then my Hybrid Fulvia (if I had a bag/jacket with me for the extra pocket). Skyva because when someone inevitably asks to walk the dog I won’t mind and Fulvia for a bit more performance while not minding too much if it gets dinged.
At home I like to rotate between my collection. Some stuff gets used more often if course but I try to use just about everything over time.
I EDC a Duncan Butterfly. Cheap, easily replaceable, great for one handed play on the go. I’ve started to carry a Butterfly XT as well in case someone asks me to try it
In my work bag I carry a Butterfly and an FD Orchid. The Orchid is a really fun shape, and I’m a little less worried about it breaking because of the stem system (can either replace guts or halves). I do still carry the Orchid in a bag to prevent scratching.
Trust me I am very thankful for people able to buy frequently and try new products. If I had the finances to do it I would do the same, is great to try so many different stuff and understand what you like (for why not a signature model in the future), it gives a total idea of what is going on around the yoyo world and than shape your taste properly not only for shapes but also for measures and little details like the gap width or even just the design. To try many products is a bless honestly both as a player than as lover of the yoyo world
I always carry a responsive or fixie (usually the workhorse v2, but lately I’ve been back on the metal harbinger) and an unresponsive. The only rule for my edc unresponsive is that it’s not so wide that it’s uncomfortable. Bathysphere is probably the widest I’ll go but my pocket throw is usually something along the lines of Cenote, sudo, end 2, panorama, Asora 2.
My current EDC is a raw Sugar I got as a free add on with a purchase from the bst. Nice reliable yo-yo that I won’t worry about scratching or dinging. Plus raw yo-yos with battle scars look cool anyway
As a Modern Responsive and Fixie player, I have many options.
I typically carry the same yoyo for a week to a month in my pocket. My requirements for my EDC is that I usually have a double of the throw. Examples of what I carry; El Mijo Poly, Confusion, Metal Harbinger, RBC, Workhorse, Turbo Grind Machine, Slim Jim, Janus, Deep(er) State.
All are comfortable in my front pocket.
I typically do not throw my EDC while home, as they were thrown during the day.
My “Shelf Queens” always remain at the house, but get thrown at least once a month. Some are rare, others hard to replace. So controlled environment over carpet.
I am gun shy to carry a Wood Fixie as a EDC. I tried once and failed. I ended up snapping the axel in my pocket, so Woodys stay at home.
