DM II's rims lost, reattached... problems?

Okay, so one of my friends managed to slam a DM II onto the ground hard enough to lose the ring. :stuck_out_tongue: Afterwards, we jammed it back on, it vibed like crazy, so I pushed the rims in pretty hard, and now it’s working pretty decently… but will there be any long term problems? And I think there’s still a little bit of vibe now… but real little.

Unless the design has changed, the weight rings are not designed to be removed and replaced. the only long term effect I can see happening is the chance they could fly off, or your DM2 would vibe or wobble a bit more than expected. Other than that, if you got it working again, you should be fine, I just wanted to make sure you knew that they were not supposed to be able to be put back on o.O :stuck_out_tongue:

Technically… not my yoyo… and I was surprised too. I hadn’t seen the rim fly off, but that’s what he told me… and he just mashed it back on. The rims were a bit crooked when I got to them, and I just pressed them back… now, I know that the celcon ones, the rims can be put back when they fall off in a hot water dye… so maybe…?

That makes sense considering the weight rings on a DM are press fitted, so if the plastic was to expand drastically you could probably get that sucker on there true enough again, or you could try dipping the rims in liquid nitrogen they would shrink enough than you could properly refit them. All of this is the best case scenario, I hope everything works out

boil some water, put the DM body (rings and plastic) in. the rings will expand and fall off. wait for them to cool, then boil the rings and put them back on. (no force needed)

The rings need to be cold and the plastic needs to be hot. Expanding the plastic and shrinking the rings will allow them to pop back together. Since this is polycarb I’m not sure how well it will work but it’s the best shot at getting the ring back on properly

If I may:

Polycarbonate yoyos with metal rings unless modded are molded on and you should never attempt to remove them. You can damage your yoyo permanently.

Celcon yoyos with metal rings are press-fit into them. If you dye the yoyo with the rings on, they will fall off as the metal will expand. This is no consequence as the rings simply go on the same way they came off, by pressing them back on

(Taken from IV’s Dyeing guide on YYN)

DMI and DMII are made from Polycarbonate, which, as stated above, means they really aren’t meant to come off. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t. Use the methods stated to put them back on, and you should be fine.

Wait… this is a misunderstanding! >:(

The rims were lost, and we smushed them back on. (Not smushed, but pushed…), but there’s a hint of vibe now… and I was wondering if there’s going to be any future problems (larger vibe?) and if we can contact YYE, which I don’t think so since it was a dingish thing that caused the rims to fly. Although I’ve never seen nor heard of a DM losing its rims in a smash, and I’ve had mine hit the cement from a 3 story throw.

Well, depending on how hard it hit could be a major factor.

They’re molded on, which means they shouldn’t come off NORMALLY. I’m sure things such as a 3 story drop are big factors, but there’s nothing saying you can’t do it with hitting it on the floor.

Yoyos are generally not hammers :stuck_out_tongue:

Jokes aside (And a bad joke at that), unless you’ve got a ridiculously strong yoyo, things can and will go wrong on an unfortunate side. I hit the ground with my '07 worlds X-Convict, and it busted the entire hub out of the yoyo. That was a relatively mediocre hit. So, it’s not hard to believe, in my perspective, that they could pop off from a hit or smack. There’s always the chance of vibe, though, especially when hitting the ground. Chances are the rims are messed with slightly, and something possibly could have happened to the polycarbonate body.

It probably wasn’t a YYJ problem, just a very unfortunate turn of events.
