As I quested the yo-field searching for that ‘just right one’ I saw the Starbrite (it was the neon that caught the eye) - but I dismissed it because it kinda looked ‘cheap’ (keep in mind I have, and like, cheap throws; One, Whip, off the shelf Duncan stuff)… so I passed it up - but Ann Connolly gave me something to think about at the EYYC this year…
Of course the advantage goes to the thrower and not the throw… but she did wicked good, all her competitors were throwing higher end metal - and it wasn’t like she didn’t that option - I’d be curious why she went that route, instead of a signature throw. She continues to be a favorite of mine and my daughters are pretty mesmerized by her…
We (my Wife and I) really like her to. My 3 y.o. Daughter knows her name and when I have a vid going with her in it…“Theres Ann!” You also got to think about Jensen Kimmett 2010 where he used the plastic Northstar. These sponsored players are good. They have enough muscle memory and skill to work most any yoyo. Go to the shop and look at the YYF One video. They are tearing it up with a $10 throw. That just comes with practice and experience, not the yoyo.
As far as why she used it, maybe it is linked somehow to sales. YYF might have wanted to push the Starlite out there to try to pump up sales. Maybe Ann just wanted to use one. Maybe both.
Ya but, the northstar is actually better than a lot of high end metals in my opinion. Also I think she used it because it is light, resulting in it being fast. ANd she is wicked fast which would make perfect sense.
She really is fast… which kind of puzzles me in the scoring of competitions- I don’t want to come across biased (my girls adore her) but I don’t see how she came in 2nd in the female division - I thought she out threw Corli. Corli was pretty slow and perhaps more methodical/technical - but it felt lacking - Ann was just tearing it up!
Yes, but after watching some of her best performances live, at worlds this year. It was brought to my attetion that even though because that was the world yoyo contest, so probably her best performance yet, she did have an awful lot of errors. I think that tha speed and complex tricks are good, but lack of conistent, perfect execution are hwat really hurt her score. Although I think if she could re-do her worlds 2011 freestyle perfectly, it would get 1st.
I have used a starbrite, I decided to buy one new and just though why not. It is light, lighter than the protostar and in my opinion the protostar is better than the starbrite. It is ok for spin time but not that good. Ann did not do any long combos with the starbrite so that speaks for itself. She also had some trouble regening it witch I found (with mine as well) to be kind of difficult. It is light and that is its downfall, too light and it dosen’t have enough weight to keep it balanced. So regens are possible and not that hard to do but they are hard to controll because after the regen then want to spin out of control. Since of the lack of weight its balance is also touchy. That is probably why her horizontal combo pittered out. It is easy to go fast with as well but Ann did not go even near as fast as she usually does. This yoyo is not meant for very stressfull and fast combos…I did mine on it and it gave out very quickly. Just look at here performance with it this time and then her other performances with metal yoyos. You can tell the diffrence in her style and speed, that speaks for itself. Not that competition oriented but hey, it’s a cheap throw that you can beat up so it is a good practice yoyo.
About her coming in second and not first…she didn’t really try for performance and points, she did alot of retro tricks…pinwheel, rock the baby, simple arm grind, ect ect. Even still, she got second place. Every time you mess up you get one point off and she did mess up a bit.
my thoughts on this, She uses a yoyo that isnt really a “first pick” yoyo for competition. I think that YYF wanted her to use it to gain it popularity, considering that they sell for $16.00, and what new plastic, cheap, good yoyo just got released that also costs $16.00? PSG.
I think its just advertising against the PSG saying that YYF has a throw that can compete.
