I love the Snack!
No Jive! Was there ever a better name for a yo-yo? I don’t own one but I desperately want one and the name definitely feeds into that (alongside many other Kuhn throws… Flying Camel omg )
The Eragon 2 by Vosun immediately got my attention.
I was a huge Inheritance fan, and when I saw the colorways I instantly wanted one
Bought a green Sliver because I’m a green player at heart in MTG. Got a Batsquatch because I love cryptids and decided I needed a yoyo named after such. Royal 1 was copped because of some personal meaning. Got the PV44 because it was unlike any yoyo I’d seen before and the name matched what, to me, came off as an experimental design.
Names/Theming in general did play a role as I’ve made most of my yoyo purchases with aesthetics in mind first. If I could make it into a symbol or connect it with personal mythology I was sold. Since my collection got larger (to me 24 yoyos is already too many but I really don’t want to go over 36) I’m being very careful with purchases and have started paying attention to specs primarily.
The name “Kanto” really got me interested because I am a big Pokémon fan but sadly they sold out before I got one:pensive:
I used to battle competitively, was hard to resist a Gengar but I held strong and decided I didn’t need one. If they do another run with a one of my faves then I feel obligated to get one, to hell with everything I said.
The combination of the name Day Tripper, the Saturday Market colorway I stumbled upon one morning, and the fact that I wanted a modern responsive yoyo all made me leap at the yoyo. Not just the name, but the combination of Day Tripper and trippy colorway.
Ah yes. Batsquatch, Kanto, and most things recess. All interesting names that make me want to try them.
The name was part of the reason I bought the senban, too.
I’m a bit of a degenerate. When yoyofreaks came out with the names on some of their yoyos and color ways and they were very much anti politically correct, it immediately made me want them without knowing specs.
Cool yoyo dude, what that called?
#@!?$# your #@'@?!
What did you just say about my momma?
I’m the opposite, at least wrt yoyofreaks. The names (and especially some of the colorway names) came off to me as something an edgy 13 year old would come up with; super cringe imo. So much that I would never consider purchasing one of them simply because of the name.
But everyone is different.
Yes, you are correct that they were quite immature and at the humour level of a 13 year old boy, lol, my humour never grew up for sure
Link to pics? I love this kind of stuff too, ngl.
As per the topic, it’s all about marketing and appeal. Just a casual look at recent successful drops show that almost (if not all) all of them have creative names, themes, or concepts. I missed out on the Kanto because they sold out quickly, but I wanted one mostly because Pokemon. I am currently doing a playthrough of Earthbound, and was disappointed that I missed the Sliver drop with that Ness inspired colorway. The RBC being desired in the red colorway (what other yoyo had sold out of red first?) also shows me how much this matters. Names are important, and ill get more satisfaction out of a good design if it also has a good name. Specs are still the most important thing about a yoyo of course.
I’d be breaking numerous rules by posting pics or links on that one or I would, lol
Google yoyofreaks and read through their yoyo descriptions
I think I want your mom in the hot night colorway, lol. Yea, not forum friendly unfortunately. Im lmao looking at these yoyos though
Yoyo friends gives you a neat little sticker with their yoyo name, too. Obviously, people put work into titling yoyos, and I do appreciate it. Many boxes have stickers or artwork or logos. I don’t just love a good name. It’s a bit of a letdown when the name is too generic. Something is missing from those that don’t have it.
There’s going to be another run so fret not!
For me, that has never happened. The shape, profile, specs and popularity of the yoyo are what I make my yoyo purchasing decisions on. Plus, a lot of the times I’ll get to see how the yoyo looks together with the name, and I’ll focus on how it looks much more than it’s name. It’s only when the name directly suggests a quality of the yoyo, like the Godspeed, that will catch my attention. Otherwise, I usually pay little attention to the name of the yoyo.
I want a sugar glider because of its name.
Same
If I recall correctly the Lodge ran a contest to name that yoyo. A good friend of one of the YYN moderators named it. (And maybe drew the art as well… someone refresh my memory here…). @Douglas_Brown are you still around? It was your buddy right?
If I recall correctly, there was a yoyo from Werrd called the Poo and being the immature little 13 year old I was at the time, I absolutely HAD to have it. I really didn’t care for the yoyo at all. In fact, I barely threw it and disliked the shape entirely, but I never regret that purchase. Eventually I sold it when the joke stopped being funny.
