I’m curious about how many people decided not to buy a yo-yo or more than one yo-yo overtime, simply because they didn’t like the name of the yo-yo or the color way(s) available?
Or another way to look at it… Have you ever felt you would’ve been more compelled to buy a yo-yo simply because it had an amazing name and of course spec similar to what you think you’re looking for?
Or maybe you bought a yo-yo that didn’t quite match up your specs, but at the same time came in some kind of awesome color way that just made your eyes pop and you had to buy it?
My personal curiosity comes from over a long period of time that I seemed to recognize certain yo-yos have names that just pretty much suck or don’t make sense for whatever reason? And some releases, just happen to drop in some pretty sad or boring colors that just do not inspire people to buy them. And possibly failure of some folks to recognize that the yo-yo release colors aren’t that hot and not that many sold from the first batch, actually ends up, not inspiring more sales because few people talk about the yo-yos because they never got them because they didn’t like the colors
So people that were potentially interested, somewhat dismissed their interest, with the thought that if it was that good, why would more people talk about it? And the reason more people don’t talk about it is because not that many people bought it so they’re not gonna review it because they don’t have it, lol.
I understand that there’s more than a couple questions in there. If you feel inspired to answer at all, answering one is better than none. So I’m not trying to draw conclusions. I’m just trying to see if names and or colorways, inspire or discourage people from purchasing them?
Names don’t matter to me. At least not in a negative way. I have a Dinosaur in the Wild for Pete’s sake and I love it.
Color ways matter a lot more. If I’m buying a yoyo new and I hate all available color ways I won’t buy it. If I’m buying it secondhand it matters less if it’s something I really really want to try.
most yoyo today have seriously awful names, most branding is also terrible and cliche (especially new minimalist style for some brand, so awful)
i’ll still collect a yoyo if it play good, that is all that matter to me.
less important to me the color way only if the yoyo play amazing., If Liminal Autoscopy only came in monkey finger vomit splash color way i would still keep it… but If I can pick this, simple yoyos look /feel/play better
I don’t really care at all about yoyo names, but color is a big deal to me. There’s so many yo-yos available, that if you don’t like every aspect of a yoyo then I don’t think it’s worth getting. The shape and specs matter just as much, if something about the design looks ugly or uncomfortable to me then I don’t want it.
I’m boring and only like light, highly visible solid colored yoyos. I do understand people into splashes and more complex anodization patterns wanting to purchase yoyos entirely based on the colorway though.
The vast majority of yoyos won’t be some revolutionary thing that inspire you and change the way you play yoyo entirely, they’ll simply be yet another yoyo. There’s thousands of yoyos that exist, why settle for one that actively has something you dislike about it?
I feel like with such a huge glut of releases, it also just makes sense why most don’t get talked about much. Because so many yoyos are just different flavors of mostly the same thing, how much is there to really say about a yoyo other than “I like how this one looks. I can do my tricks with it just like my other yoyos, but this one matches my personal aesthetic preferences.”
Absolutely, on all counts, but more so on colorways. There’s just so many yoyo releases, that sometimes choices amount to pretty trivial things. I remember CLYW came out with a yoyo called the Bear Trap. In my book, spring traps are such indiscriminate maimers of wild life, that the name was just a turn off. I’m also not necessarily a fan of names that reference warfare, but that’s not necessarily a deal breaker.
PS I actually had a hound get her nipple caught in a spring trap, and had to have surgery.
Names not so much as a lot gets lost in translation. But colorways matter, if they look cool and interesting, it might make me want to play it. Safe anodizing and predictable designs probably play sufficient enough, but I like to be inspired. I enjoy getting hyped up, and its fun when a model surprises me, I would say 90% of throwing is mental, I want to be excited to throw. To quote @AndreBoulay and the YYE tag line, “Make the Simple Amazing” is an ethos.
OneDrop Wizard. The shape/specs weren’t attractive to me at ALL but the name had me buying two Relics. And it turns out I love how they play lol.
OneDrop Wyvern. Bought the cerakote Egg version and haven’t thrown it lol. Also the PDX Phidias with its ‘totally not a CLYW Jack Rabbit’ colorway. Not a conventionally good player, but good for accuracy training.
Yeah, if I don’t like the colors or the engraving I will pass. I like a lot of stuff, so if I bought everything I liked I would have no money and be drowning in stuff. I only wanna own things I LOVE.
I pretty much “shop” on vibes alone. Sometimes if something gets enough hype, I’ll look into it more, it mostly when BST browsing I’m just looking for something that catches my eye.
I do want a Bassalope for sentiment, loved the Last Bassalope growing up, and now my son does as well
I can’t think of anything I turned down because of a name… maybe Watieboo lolol
I will note if I like the folks that make something I’ll buy it more readily and if the color I like most is out of stock but might come around again I might wait to grab a certain throw
I have the same experience you mention and other similar things, Doc! There are yoyos that I like and attract me with their specifications and design, but I don’t like the colors or their finishes, so I don’t buy them… and then there are yoyos whose technical specifications don’t catch my attention much, but they have seduced me just by having a catchy name or an appealing aesthetic, and I have bought them. And then I find that the ones I like the least aesthetically are the ones that play best, and the ones that play best are the ones that caught my attention the least in terms of aesthetics, color, and finishes. I also remember buying yoyos and, upon receiving them and seeing them in person, holding them in my hand, realizing that they are not what they appeared to be on-screen before purchasing. Everyone sets their expectations based on their previous experiences and personal tastes acquired over time. Sorry if I’ve strayed from the topic, I’ll leave it here Greetings!
I’ve not read through the replies - so stating that up front…
I couldn’t care less about a yoyo’s name “generally.” There’s a couple exceptions to that. For example - my own personal What the What? Why have a yoyo named “Orange” (UPDN) and release it in Raw or Black Colorways? LOL!
That said, I buy a huge number of yo-yos used - and I pass up yo-yos all the time that are amazing throws on my list of wants because the colorway doesn’t speak to me.
Oddly - in my head - it would seem every yoyo I buy I ask myself - could that be my new EDC? And if the colorway doesn’t speak to me - or my personality - and I couldn’t see myself carrying it around - then I don’t want it. And I know this is silly - because I have a case full of 60+ yo-yos - but that’s still my deciding factor.
I also have a few yo-yos that “I just had to have” because I thought they were freakin’ awesome to look at or I bought into the “hype” - but likely aren’t that good of a throw to me. I probably wont’ get rid of them because of what they are - but also may not end up throwing them much.
Example: I got sucked into the MFD hype. Was so freakin’ excited when I landed a First time Lotto to get a Backstage Pass - was SOOOOOO freaking disappointed to end up with a “shadow secrets” (pink) colorway. I also hated how that yoyo played in my hands. BUT it was an MFD - I wasn’t going to get rid of it. Finally found someone willing to trade MFD for MFD and no longer have that Pink BSP but now have a dope Halloween 2Evil - that throw I do enjoy. Well, still feeling the MFD pull - I picked up a Rotten Tomato Prime8. Again, don’t love the color or the throw after playing it. I ask myself why I care - why I have it in my collection - “but it’s an MFD.” Meh… This is not a slam - just some odd insight into my thinking.
I now have 12 G2 yo-yos and so far 3 of them or just “meh”. The others are freakin’ awesome. A couple are color ways that don’t speak to me - but I snagged anyway because of my G2 love/obsession.
I will say - I bought a C3 “Overthinker” - because the name spoke to me - I’m an over thinker. It also had a dope red/silver colorway. I “just had to have that throw.” I enjoy it - but not the $130 I spent on it. Doh!
So all the rambling to say - colorway typically matters a lot to me - but apparently not always - name in general doesn’t matter to me - unless it just super doesn’t fit the throw for some reason. And Hype works - at least on me.
The name means nothing to me. I can’t even name half of the yoyos in my collection. I absolutely haven’t bought a yoyo because of the color or finish. Shape is by far the most important thing to me.
