I use a little Burt’s bees chapstick, it helps a ton
new year’s eve!
for anybody starting any manifestation of this challenge tonight, i wish you well!
No doubt you will document your journey far better than I document mine. However, I think the beauty in the 2022 dEHcade is while we are all on the same journey, we are also walking individually. Like a pilgrimage, retreat, or any common experience, it will impact us all differently.
Looking forward to seeing how my new Cherry KNack and I change each other this year.
This is fantastic. Truly a deHdicated individual. I know this is for you, so I don’t feel you’re obligated to, but will you be documenting the year in video more than you have previously, or about the same? Or less?
i dunno. i’ve been on the fence about how to share this stuff. when i did the last one, instagram was just starting to be a thing - the videos were short and social media seemed less nefarious. i’ve been debating just abandoning that platform and going back to occasional longer-form videos to share ideas. .
on the other hand (and maybe it’s my ego saying it), i feel a kind of responsibility to try to keep some positivity out there in terms of this style and this journey on a regular basis.
last time around i tried to develop a couple of longer videos and i’d like to go back to that again… but i think where 2012 really affected me stylistically, 2022 is going to be more of an internal evolution, so it’ll be less apparent.
My only advice (not that I’m a sage in any regard) is to do you. You don’t owe us anything, and if it hinders your introspection just say eff the lemons and bail. We’ll be eager to eat up anything you want to share, but if you don’t want to share anything, also cool.
Personally I’d love to see just like monthly or quarterly check-ins. What you thought about, how you’re resisting finding that key and grabbing a no jive, whether or not your boys are teasing you and trying to collect bribes for the key’s location, stuff like that. Not even yoyo video, just you being you.
that means a lot, and i appreciate it.
adamantiumpimp’s words are far wiser than what I’m about to say but I feel compelled so here goes.
Kids these days TikTok. I don’t buy my kids and millions mare are all about it. My daughter follows some yoyoers in there and they have quite the audience of children throughout America, but from what she has shown me, it is other children and they are just doing whatever they think they need to do to get more viewership rather than focusing on being themselves and allowing their love if yoyo to shine through by just being themselves. I know a guy that is the epitame if being oneself and allowing their love to shine through naturally, and I can I my imagine what millions of children could learn from him.
Edit: There are many of us doing the same journey or a modified version. If the above strikes you, have at it, might do us a world of good and help spawn the youth to get off the screen and on the string. It’s not all on ed, we are a collective on individual journeys with a common goal.
Hi @edhaponik, best of luck on your journey this year. I have been following you on instagram over the last year and you have really inspired me to get more seriously into fixed axle yoyo. I got a TMBR Freemont 2020 for Christmas (my first TMBR) and I’m blown away with how great it feels to throw! I just wanted you to know that though I am not going as extreme as you, I am looking to dedicate more time to fixed axle play this year and I’m looking forward to it.
I admire everyone who will be aiming to throw a single yoyo for a year, but I don’t think this challenge is for me. There are just so many neat yoyos that I love to throw and there are even some that I’m waiting to arrive in the post (super excited about getting my fh1 remake.)
I was wondering, for those of you who are taking part in this, what yoyo will you be using and what are you going to miss the most?
I’m gonna go all February, and try to do it all on an oooooold butterfly. (Anyone know what year this is?)
It would be from around 1958 to around 1966 when Duncan was making those one piece wooden Butterflys.
Neat! I need to find a way to date these. I thought it was a little older.
So after thinking it over, I decided that while I’m going to stick with fixies for the whole year, I’m going to give myself the option to switch yoyos at the end of each month. I enjoy making making new yoyos and I’d rather not wait a year before being able to use some of them.
I’m going to start the year off with an old favorite.
Jealous!
Perfect.
Yesterday I was playing with my TMBR Turner and thought “Hey, this is the only yoyo I’ve thrown all year!”
So I had a solid run of three days. I’m already having fun making myself play fixie more, even though my goal isn’t as extreme (Play fixie at least one day each week, which is a big step up for me). Honestly I might change my goal to “Play fixie for at least a few minutes every day” because I’m really enjoying it.
Do you guys have any recommendations on how to improve with fixed-axle play? I’m looking into Doc Pop’s Popcast, he said episode 16 was about modern responsive play but I’m open to all suggestions. There’s so much info about 1A that it can be hard progressing with other styles.
There is a really good thread by @edhaponik right here on the forum. It’s going to be enough to keep me busy for awhile.
