Instead of have a mod split the posts out into a new thread, I figured id create it outright.
I was thinking pie in general; apple, pumpkin, berries (all kinds), banana cream, pecan, lemon meringue, etc. Pie is just flat out amazing and blends the flavors of sweet, tart, salty, and savory in a way that even “artisan” cakes can’t even compete with.
I guess when I think pie, I think apple, cherry, strawberry, blueberry, rhubarb, pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, key lime, etcetera. Though I guess there is “chocolate pie”… meh.
Where I live there is such a thing as the Cornish Pasty, people who live here love them and I like them too but I prefer pies (as in the savoury kind, you can’t beat a good steak and ale pie)
It depends…
My mum made a very tasty french pastry butter cream cake with half inch frosting. Also a dark chocolate layer cake with great fudge frosting. On the other hand my wife makes great french silk chocolate pies, as well as pecan or apple pies that are great as well.
That’s a hard question to answer. I’m much more of a pie fan, the sweet viscous almost glaze like consistancy of the filling has always been such a treat with good non soggy crust, adds something that to me was always more enjoyable than cake, I’d felt that cake while good, didn’t offer a satisfying mouthfeel because I’ve never liked icing very much.
It’s always left this unneeded greasy feel in my mouth if it was a buttercream or the regular store bought, but one thing cake can’t really match is intensity of flavor when compared to pie flavor, but that’s not a negative, lets take Lemon pie, compared to Lemon cake: With the pie, the filling is sweet, tangy, bright, almost refreshing if it’s not too sour or sickly sweet, while in cake form, Lemon cake has this delectable softness to it’s flavor that you can’t find anywhere else, it’s like a soft hug from a blanket that makes you wish it was a pillow so you can sleep on it’s lightly scented almost spongy texture. but what’s even better is you can reinforce that flavor with that same bright zesty refreshing taste in the icing itself.
it’s a hard question to answer, I’m much more of a pie man myself, but cake is pretty good when make well.
Walmart sells these little 4 inch pies I’ve become addicted to for just $0.50…they’re amazing imo for the price! And they’ve got a huge variety to choose from!
They’re just the right size for a filling snack!
I’m not really big on either, but I do enjoy pumpkin pie and red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, though I wouldn’t say I enjoy one more than the other.
Actually believe they’re different.
Imo crumble means the crust and dough is a little soft but very rigid and solid when broken apart whereas crisp is more of a crunchy texture that’s a little harder than normal pie dough and usually glazed with egg yolk (yes I have some cooking knowledge)
