Cake’s String Reviews

“Sorry for the absence!!” takes the same length of absence

sorry for lacking on reviews, splitting friends/school/reading/personal business is difficult. semester’s over (all As :head_shaking_vertically:), looking into grad school now, and im trying to get back into yo-young as much as I did. this helped a lot, and thanks to Good Friend @Prelaunch37 for sending me this

Wicked Weaves || C- (73/100)

The string initially feels slick and rough rather than soft, but it eventually softened out as time went on (I’ll stick the score at 3.5 to show the middle between the two feelings). It’s very fast and nice during whip tricks if you’re controlled, but my sloppiness/bad technique made the string feel like a wild animal, moving fast and unpredictably. This feeling of unpredictability was also evident in some slack tricks where the slack is hanging in the air for a bit, since the string didn’t hold its shape as much as I expected. I think the fast and loose nature of the string has a lot to do with its normal to basically thin thickness, or just me being slightly out of practice. I think it’s a bit of both!

One of the better things the string has going for it is the durability. I don’t know how, but the string shares the same performative qualities during the end of the hour as with the beginning, while still being 100% poly. A rare find, and I welcome it. Along with this, the tension holding is generally better than average. Despite this, the tension can still interfere with tricks while looking fine during a check-up, especially tricks where the string has a lot of airtime (ie. beefhook/hooks).

Verdict: Wicked Weaves are ok! It’s decent string, that’s about it. Reminded me of Slackies, but I don’t remember what I said about it. It feels flimsy and fast, it’s more expensive than most strings, but it’s made by a promising boutique company led by a great guy. Take a shot at it if you like Slackies, and let me know yalls thoughts on Wicked Weaves.

Atmos Cloudweaves || B+ (87/100)

The string is pretty slick and pretty soft while not being completely plush, and it becomes slicker as you use it (fingers and hands lost the tactile feel most strings have). Felt a lot like what nylon blends go for. Comfort was so good that I rarely noticed the string itself, if that makes sense. Few strings can do that, and it’s normally ones that mesh really well with the person. For thickness, I’ve always felt like slick/soft/nylon-y strings have tighter binds, and being a fat thickness made that tight feeling a bit uncomfortable to me but never unplayable. Slacks were on the speedy side, and the shapes of the slack looked more lopsided/forward-facing with a bit of weight to them if that makes sense (maybe one day i’ll get a photo of what I mean). Thickness probably had a bit to do with it, since whips were VERY similar. Very fast, kept shape well, bit weighted, you all get it by now. I’ve yet to see a string where whips felt speedy and slacks felt too slow, they’re often correlated. Over the hour, literally none of the performance feel changed. Maybe it was because I was focusing on zoning and not many slack/whip-heavy tricks, but any change passed my radar. Tension was still good, feel was good, maybe binds felt weirder? but that’s my gut talking and not my memory. Tension-holding with this string is great, by the way.

Nothing else to say with this that wouldn’t be overextending the review. No nonsense with this one :head_shaking_vertically: idk if it’s still being sold but definitely try it if you like string like this. Comfortable, long-lasting, reliable for any kind of trick (probably). Only reason it’s not A-tier is because of the thick-feel thing.

Or you mean updated version?

I definitely was going to order some Canopy Rope but wasn’t sure if the new kind would still bring the praise of the last batch, so went with some Alphaline whiteout, hoping it would be similar to the previous Canopy. Would also love any thoughts

also curious on @theendofcake’s thoughts on the new Canopy Rope blend, I wonder how different it is and if it’s noticeable

Canopy Rope (Updated Blend) || A+ (97/100)

The string feels REALLY soft while not becoming too invisible on the hands, but it is a bit slippery/slick compared to most poly strings, both on the slipknot and on your fingers. Regardless, it’s probably the best feeling string I’ve ever used, and I knew it the moment it touched my fingers. Its 100% a fat feeling string, and if your technique isn’t perfect you can get the occasional snag or overly tight bind on yo-yos with snow tires or with high-response pads, but I use 60-50 shore pads and summer tires so i’m living it up. Whips and slacks are very “performative,” if that makes sense. They’re decently speedy (but not crazy fast), clear, and open with a bit more weight on the front-side of the slacks, which all make for consistent but fast paced play. There’s nothing unusual with it durability-wise throughout the hour, but slacks and whips did begin to feel less fast and more solid if that makes sense. The slickness made way for solid weight and presence after the break-in, and I’m really a fan of it. Other strings sometimes feel more flimsy in the air, get snaggy (especially in my humid environment), or even start to feel lighter with time, this string does none of that. Tension holding was fine but got annoying bit annoying by the end, and durability was phenomenal, especially for bulk. The main thing is that over time, it kept a lot of its solidity and lost a good bit of its softness, a lot like the old Rope.

Here’s a tiny section on the differences i noticed!

Durability 30 min: New is more solid/frays less than Old, but the fray part is purely aesthetic.
Durability 1 hr: Same diff
Personal Thickness Feel: Same, but my stupid brain keeps telling me New is thicker bc of feel alone. Maybe binds just feel tighter, maybe I suck at binding
Whip Feel Break-In: No Diff
Whip Feel 1 hr: No diff
Slack Feel Break-In: New feels heavier
Slack Feel 1 hr: Same diff
Tension Hold over 1 hour overall: Same
Softness during break-in: New is way softer
Overall consistency over 1 hour: Because of the solidity changes, New feels more consistent

Solidity is the main thing going on. if you haven’t noticed. Because of it, the string feels a bit heavier, is addictively soft, and has improved consistency. This string is clearly tuned towards performance, which I noticed in the open and slightly quick slacks and whips. Despite that, the comfort aspects of the string makes me feel like it’s more for a “laid-back” style, with string that assists you in your play while still feeling good to use. I’ve found that the string doesn’t lose its flair with either style. It’s both a competitively viable string that flows well and a perfect string for simply playing with a yoyo and vibing out for a WHILE, at whatever skill level that may look like. I lean towards more comp-oriented meta/zoning/slack tricks, so this feels right up my alley. I prefer this new blend, and I’m debating whether to buy more of it on top of the 100ish I have left of the old blend. If the solidity was offset by making the string a bit thinner, I’d probably buy it all. Still the best on the market for my tastes, minimal contest. Stats below.
