I would love something that made it easier to understand the differences between different molds used and how to identify them. Also when they switched the plastic as the old butterflies feel different than the more recent ones. Either way yeah a guide would be welcome.

Right here my dude
Hi all, there has been excitement surrounding the new Duncan Butterflies that are made with the updated mould. I feel this excitement is warranted because the new butterflies are great. They aren’t just great for the price, they are actually really great fixed-axle yoyos. I personally was not a fan of the previous Butterfly version, but I really like this new one.
These seem to have been rolling out gradually for the past little while, so you may find some in a store near you. I found mine in a…
It was a hot topic for sure

This is what I put together last year.
This is my first stab at listing a chronological order off the top of my head, and will probably need to become its own thread. Weights and plastic hardness and /or softness are also a variable between all the editions. Detailed pictures and descriptions can be found throughout this thread for most of these models. Others with more knowledge please feel free to add.

1962- Special Edition 1 piece wooden Butte…
You can see a lot of these examples within the FAFT thread… Search Butterfly within the Topic
in 2021 I did a different variant every week that summer
With National Yo-Yo day this weekend I thought I would throw an original Duncan Butterfly, this one is in great shape for being around 60 years old, when I got it the original string was all in knots, so it probably sat in that state for a long time, as the axle and response are still a little rough, just wanting to be played and smoothed out with cotton. With a one piece design and at 58 grams, this one is a nice player and is great for modern 0A play.

After seeing the Linda Sengpiel video that @DocPop post on National Yo-Yo Day, I’m inspired to play some more vintage Butterflys. This one is just like Linda’s in the String Tricks segment where she is playing an early Flambeau Duncan Butterfly. From the clip it also looks to be a small stamp Butterfly from the late 1960’s similar to mine. When I found mine, again the string was in knots and the axle had a little rust on it that would cut strings, using the old Proyo string saw trick, I eventual…
With summer just around the corner, going to keep reeling in the years of the iterations of the Original Butterfly. This one is from the seventies when Flambeau went from embossing to silk screening. This one is also an advertising promotional model. My Dad grew up outside of Milwaukee Wisconsin so I always saw the Schlitz cans in the fridge growing up. Picked this one up from a Schlitz cross collectible collector, so it was NIP (new in package) with no rust, but i’m not going to play the origin…
With summer now in full swing I’m moving forward in time with the next and my personal favorite Duncan Butterfly incarnation, the late seventies-early eighties Lace Wings with the Reslon-coated axles. These have a great weight at 56grams, a softer feeling plastic, vibrant color combinations, made in the USA and just over all play great. This yellow and green combo has such a fun summer vibe, even on a rainy day.

Today I’m still playing on the Classic Duncan Butterfly theme and this one is a 2nd edition of the USA made translucent wide wings in green. These have a softer plastic compared to todays that are produced in China and it weights in around 50-51grams. This one is from the early-mid nineties and is still a great 0A player, working on @drewtetz Super Disco Regens. Was craving the feel of cotton today so I’m laced with YYE Type-10 .

After playing the Zipline Wood-Z Cherry XL all week I’m in tune with my light finesse throws. Going to take @bheinz63 lead above and get back to Butterflys this Friday. This one is from the mid 2000 when we first see Made In the USA replaced with World’s #1, as this one was made in Mexico. Out of all the incarnations of Butterflies this one may feel the cheapest in the hand, with a weight around 42grams, a softer plastic (compared to today’s), and a slimmer and sharper profile. But these have th…
Back on some Butterfly retrospective. Today’s is this 2016 Reproduction Butterfly compared to a couple of the originals from the early sixties. The reproductions are three piece instead of one piece, so this one had to be re-glued at one point and its still holding together. Also notice its a bit smaller and rounder, more like the AL Butterflies with C bearings, there are no silver sparkles, the logo is bigger and centered, and there is also modern ARGHH manufacturing 5 letter stamp like you see…
Today I’m at the end of my Dunacn Butterfly collection retrospective. This one is a red contemporary Butterfly from 2018 made in China with an AQJRK manufacturing 5 letter stamp purchased from a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma while on a road trip. Out of all the Butterflys these are the hardest feeling plastic and this one weights in at 50 grams. This one hasn’t cracked yet, even after a hard rim hit on the tile floor, however I have cracked these around the axle hitting the ground a little to hard. These…
A lot of talk this week about the new Butterfly mould and new runs of Pastels Pinks and Purples, so I thought I should share this Butterfly Collection oddity. This is a European Import Butterfly from the early eighties European mould used for the Fire and Neon Wheels, the special Disney editions for Euro Disney and the coveted Rainbow Butterflys. Haven’t seen many of these, this is a Purple/Dark Blue (Blurpple) body with solid Pink caps and an embossed Duncan Butterfly with Blue Foil. Feels real…
Just keep scrolling though these post over there as I can go on an on an on an on …

it was so cool last night. I got three of the new Imperial Glows (grandson, me to play and for the first time ever me to display in package) to go with my 2019 Butterfly and 1989 Rice Krispies Imperial. For that picture I left them all under an LED light on high while we ate supper. I was surprised how bright the Rice Krispies got but it started fading instantly and was 50 percent within a few seconds. They stayed under the light that was off and on throughout the night. I distributed them around the room as usual an when I woke up around 2:00 and was greeted by five glowing yoyos. The new ones still were really bright. It made me exceptionally happy. It’s a lot of love for $2.99.

I had no idea either. I got this awesome box set from
@yoyoretro a few months back. I put them on a shelf near my bed. I looked over a while after bed time and I was having a hard time figuring out what was going on. Every night since it was like DD himself was looking over me Lol!! I have enjoyed it so the new one was a no brainer. Which is also good for me.
Edit : I just realized that’s not my picture

I’ll have to post a pic in a bit but I have some. I got them at Menards which is, I think, a Midwest thing. I might even have a new green one in package still. Pretty sure I opened my last orange already.

They only have them around the holidays in the toy area. I’m not sure if all Menards are the same but, at mine, the toy aisles are up by the registers. They also have Duncan spin tops and Duncan kendamas and even Duncan rubix cubes.
