I have been noticing that string tension affects my unresponsive yo-yo play more than I expected. Even after a few throws; the string gets too tight or too loose, causing unexpected binds / making slack tricks harder to land. I have tried the usual methods like sidewinders & UFOs, but they don’t always work consistently, especially during fast-paced tricks.
Are there any advanced techniques or setups that help maintain optimal string tension for longer sessions? Do certain types of string hold tension better than others?
Iam also curious if specific yo-yo designs or bearing choices impact how quickly tension builds up. Checked A Guide to change your String TensionReactJS Training guide related to this and found it quite informative.
Would love to hear what works best for others! If there’s a good guide or tutorial on fine-tuning string tension control, please share.
Torsion is generally built up while playing. Everytime the yoyo is rotating clockwise compared to your hands, one twist is added to the string. Theoretically you could balance this torsion adding more element to your tricks where the yoyo is circling counterclockwise.
Every time you throw the yoyo and bring it back to your hand you will add half twist.
Different types of strings are differently affected by torsion. Strings with loosen twists are more susceptible to torsion because they have basically less twists to dissipate the added ones.
Most common way to get rid of torsion is to add a sidewinder to you bind, if you’re playing sidestyle you want to bind tossing the yoyo towards you and bringing your throwhand at the level of the yoyo causing a sidewinder
Yoyo shape does not directly affect torsion but it affects how easy is for the string to release or adding torsion in a sidewinder (the sidewinder effect may happen involuntarily while playing). Rounder yoyos or high-walled yoyos will create more drag with the string increasing this effect
This could be an error with my understanding of the statement, but IME tighter wound strings need to be adjusted more frequently than looser wound strings.
My advice to the OP is to just keep playing. Needing to adjust will happen less over time as you mess up less. Or maybe you’ll eventually just notice needing to adjust less hmmm
Hi, and welcome to YoyoExpert Forums! I have personally found Rei Iwakura’s (Yoyostore Rewind) method of reducing string tension the best. He explains it really well and I believe it could help you a lot if you are looking for help. Once again, welcome!
