AU social media ban

so the government can control my child’s social media access, but not companies’ unsavory business practices?

hmmm interesting

Can I be banned from all social media too, Australia? Please, take me with you!

What we really need is some huge solar flare that we predict years before it happens, but we have no way to stop it, so we just cut our losses and eliminate all technology; YYE Forums will invest in pigeon carriers for all forumers.

I’m an IT professional. What am I supposed to do for work if my magic rocks stop working due to the sun getting angry.

Go full on Higby mode-- embrace the Yo.

I’m not totally across the law, but my understanding is it’s applying to FB/Insta, TikTok, Snapchat (these two being the real problem children) and the like. YouTube is not included. I can’t imagine forums would be on the radar. They’re so few and far between these days, mostly killed off by FB.

I’d love to see a return to forums. They’re the best. And Meta can rot in hell.

Forums might actually get a bit of second wind from all this, since they stay out of the blast radius of modern social apps. I’ve even seen people drift back to slower, hobby-focused spaces after using tools like Is It Possible to Find Someone with Just a Face? because it reminds them how noisy big platforms have become. If anything, tighter rules elsewhere could make spots like this feel more chill and appealing again.

Could be. Might be able to plot discussion about Offset with young user influx lol

Ohh yeah AU kids can’t use (some) of the internet now. Haven’t even noticed. Is that bad?

Most of the activity in the Yoyo Australia FB group has moved over to Discord. When the BST aspect of the group is set up on Discord I’ll have little reason to continue using FB

The FB group being scrapable by internet searches still makes it the best way for newcomers to find us though.

Might be time to earn that badge for inviting folks to the forum

The actual end result was banning minors from holding an account with a platform that uses any algorithm to generate a feed.

Anything on FB or YT that you could view without an account is still accessible, including the generalised front page of YT which is still generated by an algorithm. Essentially making it harder for parents to keep tracks of their kids activities by removing access to an account history, but also demonstrating the need for corporations to do a better job of moderating the content that can be found in a safe search
