Ah, thanks for adding to my paranoia! 
I’ll keep trying it and see what happens, not much I can do about that… It’s not that much of a hassle TBH. One end doesn’t need to be replaced (that often) and when you attach a new string it’s pretty easy to tie on, if you’re accustomed to fishing knots etc.
