Are there any piano players on this forum? If so what’s your level/what are you working on right now? How long have you been playing?
Does a Kalimba count? As a “Thumb-piano”?
I would say no but that is very interesting.
I’m into synths, only have second hand Teenage Engineering stuff as it’s what got me into them, and I like their quirkiness.
I don’t know any songs, and mostly just make beats and soundscape stuff
Cool!
i dont personally but I’d be interested to hear what you’re working on
Hats off to all Musicians.
I can’t even play the Radio.
When I was a kid, we used to eat entire cans of beans and then sit around and belt out tunes that no one ever heard before
I didn’t realize until I saw the movie, blazing saddles, that my failure to follow through on honing my musical skills, probably was responsible for keeping me from becoming a star.
Awesome!
Beautiful!
I play piano but really just enough to use it to work out harmonies. I took lessons as a kid and it was important as a composition major in college. I always tell anyone that if you can play piano it helps you to understand music in a linear and visual way which informs any other instrument.
Anyway I’ve had a couple keyboards but now just play our old Wurlitzer upright.
i love nocturnes
I play piano and have for most of my life but I never really got super proficient at it. I’ve mainly been playing children’s songs for primary at my church and I’ll occasionally play some simpler classical stuff that I can get into the feels with. I really ought to play more often
Barely a player here. Been noodling about for 10 years or so. Never found time to learn proper technique or how to read music. But I do like messing around a bit, find something nice, translate it and work on it in an app I enjoy.
My keyboard skills are lacking but I also do not have a “proper” piano/keyboard (61+ keys). I tend to fool around more with midi and synths - got an Arturia Mini Freak and bought a cheap Korg MicroKey 49.
Otherwise, my “piano” that I play has 4 or 6 strings and instead of hammers, it’s fingers plucking them…aka, guitar, ukulele, banjolele
I grew up playing piano but it is not my principal instrument.
@edhaponik nailed it,
Honestly, I can’t imagine learning music theory without having a basic understanding of piano.
As far as practicing…The last thing I remember actively practicing on piano was running through rootless minor ii v i progressions in all 12 keys through the circle of fifths. That was probably 2 or 3 years ago?!?..man, time flies.
These days I mainly use piano as a tool when charting out new songs and find it easier to focus and pay more attention to song form. When learning tunes on guitar I seem to space out and start to noodle.
All fax no printer.
Wish I started wayyyy earlier on piano. Gonna go Rick Beato mode with my kids
I’ve got a super geometric guitar/strings mind, which has other strong benefits. But that linear way of viewing harmonies is so valuable to me now.
This is cool, I had no clue there were so many musicians in the forum
I play here and there! I actually got re-inspired this past Christmas by a cousin who plays—I decided to learn some holiday songs to get into the festive spirit, so those have been my go-to for a while now, LOL. (Already practicing/perfecting for Xmas 2025 )
I also took lessons when I was younger, like Ed, which I found really valuable because it helped me understand scales and proper fingering placements for different songs. I do wish I could read music more fluently (I technically can, but I’d have to pencil in every single note) and play more by ear just by listening.
