I’m a little curious if they still even have the file available to them.. or, maybe they have it but can’t convert it to a more modern file type.
Well it kinda makes since that the plastic peak wasn’t the best performer, after all, it is a plastic version of a 20 year old design. Plays really soft and floaty though and that’s the reason I like it. The 000 does definitely preform better.
I like the pleak way more than the 000 as well.
This is possible, but it would be an extremely easy task for any engineer (especially since Chris is an engineer and the original designer lol) to remake/reverse engineer such a simple design in CAD and get pretty dang close if not get it exact.
That’s probably because they were trying to emulate a yoyo from 2006 that wasn’t very performant to begin with. The p000 is emulated from a yoyo that is more performant than the OG Peak.
With that in mind, I do understand why they revamped the Peak for its third run. And as @unklesteve said, they were trying to balance what they wanted (i.e. performance improvements) and what old school fans and purists wanted (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it ideology). Then again, they may also be trying to include potential fans into their audience. If that’s so, then it might be working, but I still have reservations based on my preferences.
Only time will tell if it pays off.
I think it’s also likely the case that “rerun an old design” is not as exciting as a creator as “try to do something new and interesting with an old design using what you’ve learned since”.
Chris and I were talking about this. Not only do we not have the original file, but the machine shop took some liberties that were never accounted for, so my understanding is that original first run Peak is more or less impossible to 100% recreate without cutting one in half and taking exact measurements.
If anyone wants to sacrifice a first run Peak to the gods of nostalgia, get in touch I guess? But at some point it feels more appropriate to just let it go. I think we do have a file somewhere of the 2nd Run, and Chris is rummaging around to see if that’s intact and able to be converted to something useable but digging around for files on a 20-year old hard drive is…sketchy.
This is very true. Chris and I are just as prone to nostalgia as anyone else, but we also very much love moving forward. This year will be an interesting balance of the two.
If I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure @G2_Jake made a video cutting a first run peak in half. He may still possess said half. Maybe reach out to him? Just a suggestion.
you may want to image the drive with a software like ddrescue before you do too much with it
I feel like a white light scanner would work well.
I don’t want to be that guy, but this really just sounds like a giant excuse. It’s frustrating that CLYW hasn’t listened to what longtime fans have been asking for in years. Not everyone wants “performance” or constant “improvements” baked into every release, especially when it carries the Peak name.
If the goal is to make a performance-oriented organic, why not release it under a different name? For a lot of us, this isn’t about specs or modernization. It’s about how the yoyo actually plays in the hand.
The original Peak wasn’t loved because it pushed performance boundaries. It was loved because it was fun, floaty, and had a very specific feel that encouraged relaxed, expressive play. A large portion of the community still wants that exact experience, regardless of run or minor inconsistencies. Changing that feel while keeping the name just misses the point of why the Peak mattered in the first place.
Just my 2 cents, but it’s exhausting to see companies constantly chasing performance instead of preserving what made certain yoyos special.
The one he cut was a 2nd run lol
someone take one for the team and make history !! ![]()
(again)
We still appreciate the effort on the p3ak!
Also… not to dogpile too much, but losing the high wall of the Peak is a big loss IMO and literally takes away what made the Peak what it is - a metal version of the Hitman. There are PLENTYYY of low or lower wall organics but not many modern, well machined high wall ones. No one is buying a Peak recreation because they want it to be the most stable organic yoyo… they’d be buying it because they want the closest possible experience to throwing an OG Peak, end of story. It is unfortunate that extremely longtime CLYW fans including myself have simply asked for “as close as you can possibly get” to an OG Peak for years and years and years but keep getting “hey check out these minor improvements though!”… nah man… no one wants or was asking for that lmfao
If I were CLYW I’d want to get ahead of things and release my own version of a 1:1 Peak before someone else does (like with the TiVayder situation)… and I’m sure most consumers would rather support CLYW themselves rather than some guy doing it lol
Or even a Digital X-Ray
This is kinda funny to read when the Peak was inspired by a yo-yo that won worlds and the Peak itself made multiple appearances in Worlds 1a finals and was used by multiple different finalists. The Peak was considered a high performance yo-yo at its time, even if it’s a very far cry from that now.
Regardless, this is a pointless thing to argue since no one is proposing a Peak that pushes performance or likely is even particularly performant lol. I feel like some of you guys haven’t really read what Steve’s saying. Fair enough you just want a 1:1 version of the OG Peak, but there’s no need to get worked up over stuff that he hasn’t said and I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with doing a sequel to the Peak on its own merit.
I think this thread warants some quality time with the Beater tonight, the closest thing I got to a Peak lol
