An issue no one else seems tp have

I have a $20 plastic beginner yoyo. I’ve been trying to learn the bind return but the yoyo doesn’t spin very well so it ends up spinning sideways. It should be able to so the trick because it comes with a manual on how to do it, but it just doesn’t spin long enough. Is there any way to fix this or is there some way to bind it withoit it needing to spin?

This will feel dismissive but I promise I’m not trying to be. Your throw isn’t straight. It might help to get a responsive YoYo and just practice your throw a bit to get more accurate quicker as you’ll have a whole lot less winding the string to do at this phase.

If you post a video of your throw and the yoyo doing this, we may be able to help more.

From the text description, like Captrogers said, sounds like you technique with the throw.

How is your Strong Sleeper?

So I just wound it up with my finger and therw it and it actually kept spinning but as soon as I tried the bind, it got spun sideways again even though I didn’t push it. Is the shape of the yoyo too rounded or am I doing it too fast or slow???

Try watching videos on YouTube or something

I did. None of them had a solution that worked nor did they explain anything very well at all. Something I think is affecting it is all the youtubers are using the fancy metal ones and mine is a different shape

You gotta keep the strings lined up straight, if you touch the wall with the string, it’s going to tilt. You can get it to stay straight with practice and use this to straighten it out if it does start to tilt.

Don’t blame the yo-yo. Just practice. That’s a great yoyo to start with

Here’s someone winning the World YoYo Contest with a cheap plastic yoyo just like yours.

It’s 100% how you’re throwing it as @Captrogers mentioned - unless your string tension is just crazy bad, or you have an axle knot. It ain’t the yoyo tho…

As everyone said, 99.9% the issue is how you throw, BUT just to make sure you don’t fall into that 0.1%, just post a quick video showing how you throw and how the yoyo spins.

It will be easy to see if it’s the yoyo or just lack of practice, and we might be able also to give you pointers on how to perfect your throw.

Are you able to do a gravity pull with a responsive yoyo? If not, start there as others have mentioned. You’ll need to get a feel for how to throw the yoyo straight, and fast the yoyo needs to be spinning in order to get it to return. Responsive is the easiest way to do this.
If you can do a gravity pull, it’s your bind technique that needs work. All of the strings need to stay in line with each other during the bind. If you’re pulling anything to the side, the string will drag on the wall of the yoyo and cause it to tilt.

Are you still using the bearing that came in the yoyo? It should be a narrow C bearing which should make your yoyo responsive, meaning it shouldn’t require a bind to get it back up.

While you can bind a responsive yoyo, it would be much easier to practice binds on an unresponsive throw.

The whip, unresponsive, is pretty unforgiving, especially for beginners. I recommend learning to throw it responsive before going unresponsive.

Get your breakaways just right. It will make practicing binds much easier

It’s got a wheel thing to adjust how responsive it is, and I can do a gravity pulll and sleeper on it, it’s just a little hard to throw straight.

It’s a yoyofactory velocity. It looks like you might be able to retract the response pads a hair more, but I don’t think that’s making it tilt.

I gave mine away, but IIRC the Velocity doesn’t use a c bearing. “CBC Small Spec” is what’s listed on the website.

Definitely rhe best way for us to help you at this point is to post a video.

As ithers have said, its most likely a skill issue so its hard to give advice without actually seeing you trying to bind.

Bonds on a responsive narrower gap yoyo can be very iffy too, been working with my coworker on binds, had him swap out to wider bearing on his shooting star with better luck.

Also, highly recommend the iYoyo Shooting Star. Great beginner and advanced throw!

When you throw, make sure your hand it very very straight. The reason why every yoyo spins off is because of the angle. It is very important that your hand isn’t tilted. Try just dropping the yoyo in a good angle, then start to really throw it gradually. Practice makes perfect when it comes to yoyo

Oh, velocity! Fun throw but horrible for learning, imo
