Amateur Yo-Yo Photography

yep, and they are for sale too!

This photo won the March “click it, stick it win” contest as one of the staff picks. Thanks to all who voted with a “thank you.” This thread really got me on fire with taking photos, so thanks to all you guys who have shared your tips with me. Taking photos has been a lot of fun.

Cool pic! Rocking the stage.

Nice string pics too Logi!

I didn’t even vote, but would have if I paid attention! I thought it was a great YYE pic.

Definitely like the pics, but I have to say I would the string point the same way in relation to the yoyo in all the pics, especially if your trying yo make it your signature.

Nice pic!  The dual rings really set it off!

This thread always makes me want to take more pictures!

Edit:
Some OT food… Chimichangas from Cooks Country with melted jalapeno cheese, grape tomatoes, and cilantro sealed with flour glue.  The glue em shut technique they used worked great!

Some little flowers from the yard.

That looks great…made me so hungry.  I probably would have eaten that so fast…I wouldn’t notice it had been glued shut.

You do a great job of matching those colors up. Nice way to bring outside…inside.

 Those suckers didn’t stand a chance! We usually prefer the restaurant style with the beans and rice as sides, but these were a nice change of pace and worth making!

That’s all the wife on those. She says thank you.

I’ll double post with some yoyo pics since I had the black light out messing with some reactive ink. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice. You got the focus right on the petals…pretty neat! I’m messing around with spinning yo-yos again. I think I’ve got it the way I want it now. First, I tried to use the timer and let it take multiple shots automatically. Then, I got better results holding the yo-yo with my right hand, and focusing and pressing the shutter with my left hand. Funny how you can see the “E” in the middle really clear. One of my favorite shots, and a link to more below:

Nice! I do like how you can make out the “E”! I do also like to see the “Fully blended together from longer shutter or faster spinning” type shots, too, but that one is ultra-rad.

Okay, so the latest dilemma has been photographing white throws. The problem is that, when using a white background, the yo-yos tend to disappear into the background, unless I make the photo dark enough that the background appears a bit grey as shown here:

So, I did some research about how to make the white throws stand out with a white background, and it is more work than I’m willing to do at this time. It involves a lot of light positioning and trying different positions to see what works. I’m interested in getting something I can work with the first time around, for my cataloging purposes. So, I’ve been using a black background recently.

I usually use poster board for my photo backgrounds, but when I went to the craft store to buy it in black, I found some soft spongy stuff, used to make mouse pads. It’s neat, because it will not crease or wrinkle, it’s thin, easy to cut, and comes in different colors. I prefer white backgrounds, but with white throws, I’m really happy with the results. Here’s my usual photo, and the same in reverse using the mouse pad stuff. The good thing is, the mousepad stuff is not jet black, so my yo-yo string still stands out on top of it:

A few more photos of white on black:

This method will do for now, but if I crack the code on getting what I want with the white background, I’ll return to it for white yo-yos too.
