Aaron, those are super cool. Painted yoyos are starting to become very captivating to me. Higby does some incredible work.
That’s what I thought. Cotton string isn’t used for many “modern” yoyos.
Let me know how it goes, nolan. I’d like to try one, or if you could share your process, I can see if I can make one myself. Are you using the power drill method? Am I just a youtube search away from doing it myself?
for sure, my goal is to make some and mail them out to the fixed axle guys asap. i found a great cotton thread source but the verdict is out on wether or not expensive thread = nice string. ive made a few that are unbelievably good and strong, and then some have been weird and too unresponsive. id like to eliminate the stereotype of cotton strings snapping frequently, i yoyo in the same room as my newborn so the last thing i need is a broken string while im playing. i also dont like my eh and nojives skidding/ bouncing into the next room under furniture. another advantage is the ability to make them as long as i want and different thicknesses tailored to different yoyos. oddly enough i most enjoy using strings with odd numbered threads.
my only tools are two hooks in the wall, and a drill with a diy hook bit. youtube is indeed where i learned how. if you see a chubby kid and his girlfriend filming youre in the right place, even though he is a bearing yoyo HEATHEN!
Oh yeah! It is indeed just one yoyo. I don’t know what I was thinking.
Nolan, THANK YOU for the info. I would love to try one of your strings when you get them made. And I’ll go look for the chubster on youtube. Even though I purchased a TON of cotton string when I got my Eh and Baldwin, I’d still like to try my hand at making some. As for the stereotype of cotton string snapping easily, I can only support that. I’ve already gone through double digit strings in just one month. I am throwing a lot more than I expected, but still, after about an hour of throwing each day, I break a string at least every other day.
Really I’ve gone through almost 30 strings since I began back near Christmas. I don’t play as much because of school but I now break strings every few days although I have improved my own strings I make. Still doing fixed axle here and started playing more kendama with my brother because he says it’s more fun playing with other people.
Well, my knuckles have officially had all they can take for a couple days. Been trying to work on some front stalls, but the biggest problem is that I really don’t know what I’m doing, which leads to a lot of guessing, which in turn is leading to knuckle damage.
Had a great trip to the mailbox yesterday ;D. I received the Broke Village Fidalgo. (If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a machined aluminum throw with a metal fixed-axle.) This thing plays awesome. Looks nice, too.
Speaking of flying v’s, been wanting to track one down for the reason of running it on a fixed axle mod. Anyone know where there’s a spare hanging around?
It took me awhile to track mine down, just keep looking. I’ll let you know if I find another one. I’m looking for one of the silver/clear/raw ones right now. Tricky things to find
