A Year of Fixed Axle - "Fixed Axle '15"

‘why do you keep doing slack tricks on wood?’ - my knuckles

ouch

Thanks, Skinny & Aaron, for the links to other fixie tricks. I’ll have to check those out, when my swollen middle finger on my throw hand goes down. I’m working on looping tricks (mostly hop the fence and forward loops) and I’m really improving after only 9 days. But, today the yoyo came back really fast and slammed into my palm, and now my middle finger is a bloated whale. It can’t take anymore throwing today, unfortunately. Also, I’m kind of embarrassed because I went and bought wood yoyos including the Eh, and I’ve been throwing my Duncan ProFly almost exclusively. Well, at least it has a wood axle insert.

I’ve been playing my ProFlys a ton. Don’t feel bad. Fixed is fixed.

The profly is a great yoyo. I think it’s officially my recommendation to people for inexpensive fixed axle. The shape is unique, the wood axle is brilliant, and it’s take apart. I would have killed for that combo of things when I was 7 years old and learning the basics. That being said, the modern geometry and re-thought fixed axle yoyos by OUT and TMBR are pretty brilliant. I can’t believe how stable and relatively long-spinning my Treehugger feels and how fluid the Eh feels. It blows me away that the Eh has such a wide looking gap for a fixie and still responds perfectly once a string has broken in.

I just made a glow in the type 12, 50/50 polyester, glow in the dark string for fixed axle yoyos. I’m still working on prototyping and testing and just dropped $10 on it with little string to show for the price. I hope to sell some in the future.

Mother of god!

Want!

I’m not just playing fixed for a year, because bearings are awfully nice… But I am throwing fixed more. I use my eh all the time, and I just scored this super cheap on eBay:

I have a No-Jive, but this looks awesome. I love the ProYo, and I tried a Eric Koloski’s Higby ProFly, and I need one now.

I know nothing about fixed axle. I wouldn’t last a day…

For about $5 you can get a Duncan Profly or Proyo or Butterfly and give it a try. You might like it.

just made some string out of egyptian cotton… ill report later once ive played it to death but so far im very impressed.

Anxious to hear the progress

I should, people recommended me the no-jive.

Any Tom Kuhn yoyo is stellar, but if you just want to try out fixed axle, I’d recommend the ProFly or ProYo. They both cost MUCH less and can usually be found from many sources. Even this one!

A little something I’ve been working on. Finally got it on tape.

well so far so good. i made a handful of strings in just about every thickness, all played great but different than other cotton strings. i had only dyed thread at home, and want to make some white strings before i really judge. i will leave this picture of the last string i made, compared to a yye type 10.

some pictures of the strings:

hope to make something real nice and send some to you guys.
