A working journey in bearing modifications

Hi all,

I’ve come to you to note the chronicles of making a customized bearing for any of interest.

Aiming for a hybrid bearing with steel races and nylon cage with ceramic balls.

So far I have yet to succeed with a size C bearing, so I will begin this with my list of blunders and things learned.

#1- 8 ball and 10 ball bearings use different sized balls.

#2- 10 ball size C bearings take 1/16 sized balls not 1.5mm that approx .002 makes a large difference in fit although it will hold together

#3- Amazon may loose your package because someone may think it is empty.

Will post results when 1/16 balls arrive. So far I’ve ordered and received 2mm (measured an 8 ball bearing at first) and 1.5mm (thinking it would be metric standard).

This is the bearing I’ve made, lots of slop in the inner race.

Neat do you have to use flats for this or are you able to get different shapes?

I’m using another cheaper bearing with a concave for the race.

Nice I’ve tried and failed at making a groove in a few bearings but reusing a cheap concave race is probably going to work better.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. Would be cool to upgrade some cheap magic yoyo bearing to hybrids

For the nylon cage I’m also using a cheap alternative bearing. I don’t see many yoyo bearings with a nylon cage but it is definitely better than a steel crimped cage.

Eh it’s just my assumption, idk what happened to it actually, but the balls are so small one could think it’s an empty bubble mailer.

I’ve also had “light” packages disappear lol, watch parts, and bike cable end crimps.
