I’ve come to you to note the chronicles of making a customized bearing for any of interest.
Aiming for a hybrid bearing with steel races and nylon cage with ceramic balls.
NEW Information
I have now made a hybrid using 1/16 ZrO2 balls in a magic yoyo bearing which originally spun on a bearing tool for 5-6s out of package now to 17-18s. I have a feeling the tolerances on those races aren’t as good and I think I can achieve better spin times, as the kabo bearing nylon caged steel ball bearing spins on a tool 20-21s with little to no vibration. Next I will be putting Zr02 balls inside of those races with the nylon cage and one with a steel cage swapped from a RCS bearing which will get the nylon cage and Zr02 balls.
Testing has been done by repeated spins set up on a bearing removal tool after the bearing has been cleaned with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and a compressed air gas canister.
As soon as you add a drop of oil to a clean bearing you will notice an immediate loss of spin time by ~3-4x, if sprayed with air up to high speed removing excess in the process it makes it ~1.5-2x, oil adds friction and deceleration.
Notes:
8 ball size A bearings use 1.2mm balls.
10 ball size C bearings use 1/16" balls.
For the nylon cage I’m also using a cheap alternative bearing. I don’t see many yoyo bearings with a nylon cage but it is definitely better than a steel crimped cage.
