Middle of the night in Europe, sure hope the drop isnât immediately after
EDIT: Drop is confirmed, and will be early evening in Europe!
Am not a discord user but maybe someone can share some info here if anything revelatory is posted!
@edhaponik with Summit 2 on IG ![]()
There was a ton of much appreciated info shared about each company and the people driving them. I donât know if transcripts/recordings will be available, but it would be well worth the time for anyone who follows CLYW, One Drop, or is just looking for insight into how one corner of the industry works.
Regarding the Summit 2 release, these are my hasty notes:
- No more first draft runs are planned. Consensus was that playing the production version with ULs provides an equivalent experience.
- A Seven Summits-like project could happen, but based on a different theme.
- Player editions were inspired by players experimenting with SEs. Upcoming editions include Aaron Davis and JaâVan Carr.
- No Snow Tires were on hand so the design uses Flow Groove (executive decision by Steve Brown)
- There are a handful of NQPs, which may only be available in-person.
- Long term production is currently planned, including classic colorways.
Thanks for this!
Aww man Flow grooves are never in stock lol
i will definitely be waiting for more color options ![]()
The OG Summit was pretty much the only yo-yo I threw for a few years, and Iâm really looking forward to seeing how this one compares to my all-time favorite yo-yo.
Arenât flow grooves just standard 19mm pads?
Iâm pretty sure theyâre deeper?
Thereâs two sizes of flow groove, normal and slim. Theyâre both 19mm OD but slim are ~1.0mm thick (theyâre thinner than the average 19mm OD pad, so regular pads will protrude) and normal are ~2mm thick. I might be a tiny bit off with these numbers, but around there.
I have no idea which one the Summit2 uses since I havenât siliconed it yet.
Banger yoyo though, I feel like calling it the Summit 2 is almost a disservice.
The Summit 2 couldâve been almost anything and it wouldâve sold on name alone, but the 2 is a slam dunk that stands on its own rather than just riding the coattails of the OG.
Anyone else going to wait for an unknown version?
I would but I love purple and donât actually have a solid purple YoYo, so purps it is lol
Iâll probably snag a splash in the future if possible, but an unknown would be cool as well for a first pick up in that series
The 19mm slim pads arenât referred to as âFlow Grooveâ and are used in very few One Drop yo-yos. Clique, ThruLine, and DS-61 are the only ones I can think of. Summit 2 obviously does not use them.
The Top Deck uses them. This is on the page on the OD website for the Top Deck.

Iâve never played the original (either at this point). I had assumed that the Summit 2 was meant to be an evolved Summit. In the same way that both companies have been releasing some modernized classics.
My takeaway is that the intent was for the Summit 2 to be a ground-up design (with Steve posing the question âresponsive or unresponsive?â). The name doesnât so much indicate that it is a sequel to the original, but the product of a second design summit between the companies.
If the Summit was supposed to be a mashup of an Avalanche and Cascade, it sorta just morphed entirely into its own thing. Summit 2 feels like instead of trying to tweak what the OG Summit was as an update, they mashed up the Leaf with Summit and we ended up with just a totally new yoyo.
If youâve never played a Summit before, this isnât an OG Summit and will not fill the void. But for people who already own or just like the Summit, this is just something entirely new for you. Where something like the Leaf was meant to modernize and replace the Chief, the Summit 2 doesnât replace the OG Summit. And Iâm not saying this as a jab to the Summit 2. Honestly I think a decade from now when people have nostalgia for this release, youâre going to get more people just genuinely preferring what the 2 brings to the table over the OG.
I think in @Dizzavis 's blog above, he called it a chief with side effects, and during design they split the cad between a cheif and a leaf so the dimensions are somewhere in the middle of them.
