200 $ Budget to start my Yoyo Hobbie

Hello!

I’m starting at the yoyo hobbie and I’m trying to get some good yoyo’s. I bought a really cheap one and I’ve been playing responsive and unresponsive. I learnt how to do some tricks and now I want to invest a bit in the hobbie.

I’m looking for buying GOOD yoyos for different purposes and I would love that anyone recommend me some models to buy! I’m mostly interested in 1A tricks  but I want to learn some fingerspins and also some fast tricks. I would like to spend like 200-250 dollars on this. I started with a MagicYoyo V10 which looks awesome.

Thanks in advance!

Ciao Malabestia (are you italian?)

I do not think at the very beginning you need to spend that much, all you need is one or two yoyos (as you want to specialise in 1a) and start to follow tutorials and watch videos from pro online (to get inspired) like there is no tomorrow.

I would say that maybe you can invest a bit on strings and have good ones, it will help to be less frustrated with string torsion and similar (until you learn how to control it properly).

About yoyos, you have already a very good one to start, what you can do is maybe to invest in another one to have two but I do not see the utility, at this point of your career is hard for you to appreciate the differences between yoyos and the way they play, when you are at the beginning pretty much all the yoyos are the same.

My advise is just to use a lot what you already have (and maybe upgrading the strings if you do not use already very good ones) and then in the future when you will get around the intermediate level think about a new yoyo.

Maybe know a bit more about your skill level can help

Thanks so much Albertino. I’m spanish  I’m a bit popular at tiktok and instagram because of another hobbies.

Which brand of strings do you recommend? I was about to buy a 100% polyester ones

I’ve been practicing for 1 month or 2 now and I’m already learning pretty fast. I have the money and I’m really interested in buying some yoyos just to try the differences between them. I was about to buy

Shutter
Shutter wide angle
Solstice winter
A good 2A just to try out

As said, is too early to appreciate the differences in yoyos, you need a bit more skills to start get what is the difference.

I would say save those money for the future (maybe around 7-8 months of constant practice).

I would say that you can buy a Shutter, is a yoyo that is good from beginner to pro, you will grow with it and is a classic in the yoyo world.

About strings my favourites are those 3: Zipline - Alphaline, Sochi - Phoenix, Monkeyfingers - Vines

Strings are quite important for the game, as you have the money I will try the Alphaline so in this way you are already set.

I think a combo Zipline - Alphaline and a Shutter is a easy combo that also more navigated players can use without problems and to perform any kind of trick!

About 2a I cannot help as I do not play it but advices will arrive

Those are strings for daily use? Didn’t know that could get expensive so thanks a lot for the advice, will keep in mind. How long do you use a string before having to replace it?

So a string it can last usually around 2 weeks it depend of how much you play and the tricks you do but generally I would say 2/3 weeks (different brands last differently and feel differently, I have advise already some amazing pro brand where the string last a lot).
When a string is exhausted you will notice it easily, it usually become thinner, dirtier, it lose so much of the colour, feel stiff and coarse and start to torsion a lot even just a simple throw, when this happen then it is time to say goodbye to that string.

Start with nice strings is even better than start with expensive yoyos, you will really see when you will start to learn whips and slacks!

so 100% polyester ones or cage free aren’t that good?

I didn’t tried the cage free, we have a topic where many strings get reviewed by our dear @theendofcake.

In here you find so many reviews, I not always agree with they but usually there are good points to start to understand some strings.

At the beginning also the difference in strings is probably hard to feel, I just directioned you to something very good that makes everything less frustrating and durable in time.

Also 100% polyester is just a type of string, a material (which is also the ones I use usually) but there are so many mixed materials like nylon, poly and nylon etc etc (will not worry at the moment about those different ones)

Hehehe of course it’s a material. I mean there’s no brand on them but there is a bundle for 100 strings 100% polyester. Will take a look at the post you linked. Thanks so much mate lucky me to find you!

I think those are some “generic” from yoyoexpert (if you find them there), there should be some reviews about them as well.

And do not worry mate anytime, if you need help ask or DM me, happy to help I know at the beginning can seems a bit “too much” but slowly it will all make sense.

Biggest advice I can give is always: learn as many tricks as you can more then care about the hardware, a collection of stuff will build with the time and you will want to get rid of many!

I gotta echo Albertino. I wasn’t on the forum yet when I first started, so I wasn’t able to heed sage advice like his and now I have so many cheap yo-yos that I don’t want but can’t sell (because nobody else wants them either). If you’re learning fast already with what you got, then you have what you need. I do understand the impulse of wanting to try all the different shapes and if it’s really that important to you, then go for it. I would just say take some time to do your research and don’t just buy every cheap yoyo you see. A shutter would be a good choice as it’s a staple in the community but certainly not necessary.

Hello Yodaddyo and thanks for replying! Yes… Magic yoyo V10 works great but I started with a really bad cheap one.

I was looking for this ones but do you have any recommendations? Like the shuter which seems the most all around quality one. I do have the money and do really want to spend on it, but not waste on not worthy yoyo’s

Just have this in mind:
Shutter
Shutter wide angle
Solstice winter

Can’t go wrong with a Motion yo-yo, they make excellent throws, also Atmos makes some awesome throws too, my favorite yo-yo is an Atmos

Shutter og/wide angle are both good versatile yo-yos. If you want a really fun yoyo that will get you as far as you want to go, I like the iyoyo iceberg. I do have bias though as that was my first $50+ throw and it was like night and day difference from the yotricks sage I was throwing. Other ones I like, that are usually relatively easy to find, are Duncan yoshicuda x, grasshopper gtx, orbital gtx, anything from gsquared (g2), circle city yo-yos to name a few. There are many others but this is a good start.

I also suggest checking around the bst as you can get some really nice throws for much better prices than retail.

Thanks both. Really good advices to start researching :D. I didn’t know about orbital gtx but looks awesome.

sounds like the yoyofriends shortcut is right up your alley! people tend to overestimate how much money this hobby requires, but a good monometal can get you incredibly far with good maintenance of string and pads. it’s only $30, pretty fast, and has a blasted cup for learning fingerspins. this gives you way more room to spend on other yoyos with different playstyles, strings, and other maintenance tools.

for string, i recommend getting something on the cheaper side and eventually moving to better strings that fit your preferences. if you wanna skip that though, just get a 100-pack of original throw in normal and move to fat later on if you want tighter binds.

shipping outside the united states would probably add a good bit though, so for this site i would buy enough where you get free shipping (which shouldn’t be too much of an issue with your planned budget)

good luck on your journey though! it’s a wonderful hobby

It’s really awesome. Also, kinda sharp  if you go with that one be, make sure you clear those snags before you throw it! I have a scar above my eye from that one.

Tons of great recommendations on here! I agree with a lot of what’s been said, especially around the shortcut and the Duncan bimetals. I love my Grasshopper GTX 2 and I also saw someone post a GTR recently for $40 which is a great price!

There are tons of great yoyos these days so it can be overwhelming but also really fun! You don’t have to break the bank, but if you get one yoyo in each of these categories you’ll be setup really well imo:

Plastic that can switch between responsive and unresponsive (Yoyofriends AoE, C3 Speedaholic XX, etc)

Monometal (Yoyofriends shortcut, YYF Shutter, General Yo Majesty, UNPRLD Recognition, Motion yoyos etc.)

Bimetal (Duncan bimetals are solid and quite affordable imo but there are tons of great bimetals. Don’t be afraid to try a B grade bimetal from Yoyofriends, C3 or something from BST. You can get incredible yoyos for a lot cheaper that way and the vibe is usually very minimal).

Just my two cents. Have fun, don’t feel like you need to get everything under the sun, but I think a solid yoyo from each of these categories will set you up very well for a long time as you grow in the hobby without breaking the bank especially if you use BST. Hope it helps and welcome to one of the coolest hobbies around!

Per @Albertino, I cannot overstate how much decent string has changed my game. I’m pretty casual and still learning, but going from the stock string to Kitty to Executive Class Lite and I just feel much better at doing or attempting tricks.

I did buy a few relatively mid-priced (for some of the prices I’ve seen) throw, but I really only play with one right now. A decent throw is definitely worth the purchase, but I definitely wouldn’t invest a significant amount a few months in (tbf, I did buy a pretty expensive (+$90) throw, but it was after 2 days of wrestling with whether or not to get it, but this is an outlier event, not my norm).

Fwiw, I would definitely invest in trying a bunch of strings (get sampler packs if possible) and see what you like and what works for you, then when you find something you like, get a bunch. A decent, but not overly expensive, throw would also be worth an investment, but I wouldn’t buy a bunch or a single expensive one

@Albertino @megachicken289 I can buy Alphaline sochi highlighter or Kitty string Fat new which both look pretty well on the chart Albertino added. Which one would you choose? prices are similar
